Trichromatic
Impact? Charisma? Numbers? One thing is for sure that no one becomes ATG after his career is over. Once the player has played 40-70 matches, they give an impression of being ATG material and by the time their 75% career is over, they are established as ATG. Link to comment

To answer your question, an ATG is introduced early into the team via the incredible powers of simple, logical deductive chains of reasoning. Edited June 10, 2018 by beetle Link to comment

Clarke
My one word answer would be abilities. Then comes the commitment. It could be solidity in batting technique, hand-eye coordination, landing the ball on the seam in the corridor etc. The best players do the basic stuff better than others and are often complimented with additional strengths such as bowling quicker than norm, turning more than the norm with control or simply having more time at hand when facing any type of bowling. Among those large set of players with good temperament, those with abilities tend to end as ATG players. Like in current team, Vijay, Kohli, Chepu and Rahane have good temperament, but other don't have abilities like Kohli who is mostly likely to become ATG. Similarly among bowlers, many are workhorses and heart to bowl, but bowling is even more dominated by abilities. Link to comment
Trichromatic
Coming to numbers part: Openers - avg of 50+ over a long career. Middle order batsmen - avg of 50+ who played till early 2000s. For anyone who played after 2000s mostly - either career avg of 55+ over sufficiently long career or avg of 50+ with peak avg of 55+ for sufficiently long duration. Bowlers Avg < 24 for all those who played till 2000s. Avg 23-27.5 over a long career for those who played for long enough. For those in 25.5-27.5 range, some performances in alien conditions. Temperament was missing Kumble vs bhajji in last leg of career- kumble had the hunger, temperament which bhajji lacked in his last leg of career so he wnt be considered ATG by many As i said its not only one thing its a combination of many reasons like hunger , fitness as well Temperament alone cnt make u gr8 u need other ingredionts but when u have other n add temperament u have an ATG Link to comment
