This is happening for the second time this year. In June, Indian captain Virat Kohli faced flak for skipping a Test against Afghanistan and now three months later, he has come under criticism for not playing in Asia Cup despite the presence of strong teams like Pakistan in it. Former Indian batsman, coach and selector Sandeep Patil was particularly brutal in his criticism.

While Kohli was rested for the upcoming six-nation tournament in the UAE in the wake of the gruelling series in England and keeping in mind the packed international schedule that India have later this year. Patil felt it was not only unfair for the fans not to see the regular skipper playing in the high-profile tournament but also for the team which will miss the service of a key player.

India will play Pakistan in the group stage on September 19 and are highly likely to face in the Super Four stage on September 23. They might also end up playing in the final and the prospects of three high-voltage clashes with the arch-rivals could make Kohli’s absence look even more prominent.

Patil in his column for The Quint wrote: “Lately, after the introduction of T-20 cricket, many of our own players have been seen opting out of national duty to make themselves available and fit for the cash-rich IPL.”

Patil can’t understand why Kohli is made to skip Asia cup which has Pakistan ties

“I do agree that players’ workload should be taken into account but when it comes to India-Pakistan matches – in which the cricket-loving people of India get so emotionally and sentimentally involved – it makes it difficult to understand why such a decision was made.”

Patil cited the case of India’s legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev saying he also carried a lot of workload but never finished the work till he retired. “Has cricket changed so much that today’s Indian players who are so fit and focused can’t take the workload?” Patil asked.

India and Pakistan have played in 129 ODI games till today with Pakistan winning 73 of them and India 52. Four matches remained inconclusive.

Under which rock this idiot is leaving in.....he wants kohli to avenge the ass whipping which he got during his time. He still thinks people are that emotional for Pak game. Other than wc or any world event no one cares about Asia cup and Pakistan ....even most of the icfers were in favor of dropping bumrah, dhawan and few other senior for this shitty tourney.

For few old ex cricket pundits and of course Pakistan it’s be all and end all personally I am more concerned about our overseas performance.

Agree with everything Patil wrote. And it has not happened 1st time. Kohli since his marriage skipping lots of series. He is thinking himself to be bigger than the game which he is not. As a captain he should not have left his team at bay in Asia cup. If he was genuinely injured, why did he played the 5th test which was a dead rubber?

If he had not played then there would have been accusations that he chickened out left the team in trouble most of the fans don’t care about Asia cup the future assignments are more important than bashing Lanka or obsessed Pakistan it’s not be all and end all.

Which tournament is shitty depends on people to people. For me IPL or any other league cricket is the most shitty and meaningless tournament ever. Nations pride any day over some franchise league cricket. And I am not in favor of Indian captain skipping international games and playing non stop in IPL.

What is there to chicken out in a dead rubber? LOL. Eng already whopped our a$$ and won the series by 4th test. So Kohli playing in 5th test meant nothing. Also you don't speak for all fans, whether they care for Asia cup or not. As a captain, he must play all international games if fit, else give up the captaincy to Rohit. He is just fooling fans like you.

He is also having back problems if you feel he is faking it then I don’t know what to say but if he didn’t play the last test then he would have been under fire for leaving the team in trouble.

We need to stop paying attention to every tom, dick and harry. These old players and their continued obsession with Pakistan matches is cringe-worthy. This is one of the reasons why Indian cricket never succeeded back in those days.

Great post Lani the goal should be to beat teams in their own conditions overseas and win WC which is > Asia Cup.

Are you tom dick or harry ?... If you leave that to me, I ll say you are a DICK . You should be the last one talking about Indian cricket future since you are more worried about your karnaraka players.

he comes from a time when Ind-pak games were the sole money spinners - pre IPL pre marquee overseas series timeline - sharjah etc were prime time. Time has moved on..India still has a good team in there, agreed asian teams are strong atleast 3 teams can beat them but its ok.

But don’t you think too much importance is given to Pakistan 90’s or 2000’s were exciting to watch with likes of Wasim,Waqar,Shoaib,Inzi or Sachin,Viru,Rahul Dravid,Yuvi and Gambhir or MSD?

More I see Kohli as our LOI skipper, more I miss MSD. Just doing fist pumping and fake aggression does not make one good skipper. The only point he had was his test captaincy record but after the humiliation in SA/Eng that myth is also busted. Atleast we won the ODIs in 2014....is baar woh bhi haar gaye

But I am glad he is not playing the Asia cup, meaning team will be under better hands of Rohit Sharma. Kohli can relax and come back for another humiliation in Australia

Even kohli don't care about ipl in terms of winning. The guy is dickhead but you can never complain about his commitment its  his commitment only that he scored highest run during much hyped English series . Don't you think India primary endeavor should win overseas test series and wc. Moreover its good opportunity for sharma and Indian team that they prove that this team is not only about kohli.

Not sure...never in the history of Indian cricket it had happened that Indian captain in his prime pick and choose series.

In Sandeep Patil's playing days, India used to beat Pakistan more often. He himself won a game or two against the old enemy. Indian cricket's LOI transformation started with the 1983 world cup win, which Patil was very much part of. So he does have the experience of winning. Now, why should only Kohli be allowed to rest when bowlers like Bumrah are not allowed to? He would do well to skip a season of IPL citing the need to rest. Instead, he plays it every year leading his franchise to disappointing losses.
