Surely we can't afford such an inconsistent opener with just 5 batsmen playing. can we? Edited March 28, 2017 by kira
sm332 Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 This will be a big determinant in whether we are competitive in our next overseas cycle. cowboysfan 1
sensible-indian Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 We have inconsistent Vijay, unsure against spin Rahane, Virat "I bat big or go home" Kohli, Karun "terror for home team" Nair and Pujara. Our top 5 is the best in the world in terms of potential but our lineup is always messed up at any given point of time. Home or away, in every series, it feels like we bat with just 2-3 batsmen. Vijay is really the most inconsistent of them all. Gollum and G_B_ 2
vvvslaxman Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 yea what is frustrating is most of the time he deals with the hardest part and gets out.
gattaca Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 He used leave balls out side off consistently got out same way both innings. May be extra pace did it. But need to work on this.

jusarrived Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Was a lot more fluent when we where playing away , has been going to very defensive mode lately . You almost get a feeling that hes losing interest ?
Gollum Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Without Vijay we will get embarrassed overseas. He is a good bat who played well in the home season except this series. Sure, he will bounce back.

Earlier I remember Vijay also liked attacking even though he liked leaving few good balls, he kept playing his shots. Now with Rahul as his partner who also likes playing his shots, he seems to have changed his game a bit. Sometimes different partners can change your game. Vijay won't have been asked to change his game, it just has happened in no time after having spent time in the middle with Rahul and Vijay need to sort that thing out.

He won us the 1st test against NZ on a very difficult pitch. I think he top scored in both innings. Him and Pujara set up the series win there, Kohli/Rahane scored dead rubber 100s in that series. Against England his partnership with Pujara while trailing by 530 odd saved the Rajkot test, else we would have been 0-1 down against our most difficult opposition of the past 5 years. Series would have taken a different turn if we had lost Rajkot test. Played very well in Mumbai test too. Against Bangladesh got a 100. He is still better than Rahul who needs to prove a lot overseas. We should back our quality players if they get a few low scores. Vijay is quality, he will bounce back. One thing I am sure, without Vijay we are losing the RSA series very badly. Forever Indian 1
sm332 Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I am not sure anyone is advocating dropping Vijay - but the point is that if we see this type of inconsistency across several overseas series we are unlikely to make much headway
G_B_ Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Its Murli in a nutshell. He should be averaging about 45 but averages 40. Sucks in these really small chases when battle is won. Sent from my Wileyfox Swift using Tapatalk
coffee_rules Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 We don't have a Jaffer or Gambhir waiting in the wings to replace Vijay. We can live with his inconsistency if others can cover for him. He performs when it is needed , so I don't think it is fair to ask for his replacement.
The Realist Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 A decent to good player but nothing more. Was always a back up to Sehwag & Gambhir and has not really kicked on since being given an opening slot. If there were younger openers piling up the runs in domestic cricket his place would be under threat. Would be good to have some more competition for places as Mukund is mediocre. schumibest and G_B_ 2
Forever Indian Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 More than the scores he makes, the balls he faces is what would be of most importance on overseas tours. Also he has been pivotal in our few Wins and Near Wins overseas like Nottingham Draw, Lords Win, Adelaide Near Win chasing with Kohli, etc. Gollum and G_B_ 2
sm332 Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 to be fair - if he bats out an average of 75 balls per innings, it will help our cause enormously! Gollum 1

vvvslaxman Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 He is definitely one of the soundest opener i have ever seen playing for India. There was a stat about his ability to leave the balls after string of overseas tours. It was pretty impressive. He never had this frightened look against any fast bowler like you see with guys like Mukund. Remember how Jaffer was owned by Brett Lee innings after innings with same length. Sidhu was owned by Angus fraser. My problem is not his ability to see off new ball. My problem his inability to make it count after doing all the hard yards. That is where he is doing grave injustice to his career. He is a better batsman than his average suggests. Nothing wrong with his technique. He just spends too much time at one end. Eventually he gets a good one. G_B_ and Gollum 2
