Rahul at 4 : Discussion Thread

1. The experiment hasn't worked so far.

2. It is highly unlikely that all three : Rohit,Dhawan,Rahul will be available Everytime. One or the other keeps getting injured/is out of form terribly.

So maybe Rahul should stay at opening and we need to find two options just for No.4. Currently Jadhav/Pandey and Rahane are the candidates.

Need to have all these folks in the mix with equal match experience before the run up to the WC 2019.

Your thoughts?

3  matches with low scores  don't mean much.

He is not used to batting in the middle-order and may take a little time to get acclimatized.

All player with potential should be given sufficient time to prove their mettle.

i agree, so whats the need of making him a no 4 player, clearly thats not his strength.Playing in the middle order is not that easy, ask hitman

Looks better warming the bench.. Should be backup for dhawan and Tailent

Dhawan

Rohit

Kohli

Pandey

Dhoni

Kedar

Pandya

Openers' slots filled by Hitman and Gabbar

No.4 slot is the only one available

Another point is ..... I feel Rahul maybe a good No.4,  if he gets acclimatized to this slot, as he can hit the big shots if he has to bat past the 40th over ( which happens often with No..4 batters )

he has barely played 10 ODIs. Too early to call.  Needs to play more games to get acclimatized to middle order. There have been several openers who shifted to MO and did well. Joe Root is one, Michael Hussey is another comes to mind.

rahul needs to start well with singles and twos...he gets restless if he doesn't get boundary early on, opener's mindset.
All his innings were soft dismissals trying to manufacture shots in the air even though he can play on the ground and maintain good strike rate like kohli.

Play him at 5 , Mansish at 4 pandya at 6 and dhoni at 7..If too many wicket falls dhoni can be used as a floater.

Pandey needs to start bowling again if we want to drop / rest Jadhav in a few matches, as Jadhav acts as the 6th bowler.

More than the no. 4 position, he has had problems with playing Dhananjay who has got him out all 3 times. He hasn't read him well and you can say that the ones in 3rd and 4th ODIs were soft dismissals. Rohit Sharma kept failing for a long time in the early part of his career and Kohli also took some time to get started. Rahul has already proven his potential in Tests and IPL. No reason to pull the curtains on him after 3 innings that he failed to score in. Remember he scored a fifty in each innings of that tough Australia test series, so its not like he lacks the mental mettle. Need to be patient.

No one is pulling curtains on him lol...

Just that eyeing 2019WC, we need to have atleast 3-4 openers ready and same with MO..need to have 2-3 guys in the mix for no.4.

You don't wanna be swapping around Rahul b/w opening and #4.

That is what many posters have suggested - play Manish Pandey instead of Rahul at No. 4 (which means Rahul will not be playing at all). In my view, ideally Rahul should be opening the innings but since that is not possible (practically speaking) because of Rohit/Dhawan, I would prefer him playing at 4 than not play at all. He has the game to be successful at no. 4 and can score at a SR of 140 if the situation demands. I am not sure Manish Pandey can. He seems to be another version of current MSD. May not get out easily (as he did against SA A recently) but can't score at more than a SR of 100-110 max. This is very useful on 250-par pitches but utterly useless on 330-par pitches. I am afraid we will get the latter ones in England in WC 2019.

i really doubt jadhav's credibility in do or die  situations like-  ct finals or 1-3 odi in sl ....except that match against england in india.

also his foot doesnt even move against spinners - as in case of dhananjaya and shadab khan...

if i were selector then would replace him with raina or yuvi who can deliver in crunch situation  if top-order collapses.

He is an ideal batter if he comes in to bat after the 40th over.

Can start batting at a high SR from ball one then and is better at tackling pacers, who provide him with the pace.

He does look a bit off if he comes to bat early.
