Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre Behl today revealed she has been diagnosed with “high grade” cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in New York. The 43-year-old actor called the diagnosis a “curveball” but said her family and close friends have rallied around her and they remain “optimistic” in this difficult time.

“Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them,” Sonali said in a statement.

The actor, the latest Bollywood celebrity to be diagnosed with cancer after Irrfan Khan, said she is taking the battle head on. “There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way... I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me,” she added.

She has not revealed the type of cancer she is suffering from but thanked family and friends for the “immense outpouring of love and support.”

Bendre, best known for her role in ‘90s movies such as “Sarfarosh”, “Diljale” and “Duplicate”, is married to filmmaker Goldie Behl. The couple has a 13-year-old son, Ranveer. The actor, who has been more active on television in the past decade, recently left her judging chair at reality TV show “India’s Best Dramebaaz”. She has been replaced by Huma Qureshi. Reacting to the news, actor Reteish Deshmukh said, “Deeply saddened and shaken by this news. Praying for your speedy recovery and good health.”

the fact that it has metastasized shows a pretty poor prognosis. even if she were to come out cancer free, she would have to keep checking for the rest of her life to see if there is a recurrence which would be more aggressive than the current state. i dont see her living anymore than 3-5 years and that is with good care.  sad, she was one of my favorite actresses in bollywood.

Not that I'm a medical expert, but I was curious on this topic and read a bit about it and started reading this book sometime back. Based on the available info on her i.e. metastatic form, there is a lower chance of her survival, hope the best for her and every victim.

What Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee mentions is that cancer has existed for eons of time (found in ancient mummies) but is much more visible now since it mostly affects humans of higher age groups (avg lifespan was 30s until few hundred years back) and lifestlye changes (food, pollution, smoking/alcohol) increase the risks substantially. Having said that, we do need a lot of answers on prevention and cures of cancer.

I think it is mostly because of increased life  span.

Parkinson and Alziemers were unheard of in earlier times because they generally show up much later in life.

Now I see so many families dealing with  older members suffering from these two.

That's half the story. For instance, the correlation between smokers and lung cancer victims is quite high. Every chain smoker isn't going to be a lung cancer victim but the reverse has high probability.

True.

But people have been smoking for ages.

Earlier...most of these people died of other 'natural' causes before the smoking resulted in cancer.

Or may be the causes of death were never diagnosed as cancer because of lack of medical facilities.

In villages even now when peole die probably of heart attack...peoole say..

Uski chaati (chest)pe bhoot chad gaya .

"A recent study by Oxford University, looking at how diet affects cancer risk, revealed that vegans have a much lower risk of getting the disease (Key et al., 2014). ... They found that overallcancer incidence (compared to meat-eaters) was 11 per cent lower invegetarians and 19 per cent lower in vegans."

Cancer is more prevalent in the west. I guess the reason is non-veg and alcohol.

In totality, pollution, non-veg, smoking and alcohol will greatly increase one's chances of getting cancer.

My Grandfather, aged 93 now, can't go past a day without his booze and nonveg. He eats meat and drinks more than I do. He was a heavy smoker for 40 years of his early life too.

Metastatic cancer doesn't mean that She has very little time,Yes Prognosis is bad but with extensive treatment It is possible to survive.

Why any news site isn't mentioning She has which type of Primary cancer as in Blood cancer,Skin etc..Metastatis means Secondaries spreading from Primary Nidus through any route(Blood,Lymph). It eventually is grade of cancer mainly used for prognostic indicators.
