Australia head coach Justin Langer has lent his support to the three banned cricketers who are on a comeback trail following the sandpaper controversy earlier this year. Former Australia captain Steve Smith, deputy David Warner and opener Cameron Bancroft were handed bans by Cricket Australia (CA) in March for their role in the ball tampering scandal that broke out during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. While Smith and Warner were suspended for 12 months, Bancroft was given a nine-month ban.

Langer said the trio will be welcomed back to the Australia set-up provided the conditions are right and they are ready to contribute. “If our environment’s right and they’re playing well, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be welcomed back in to help us win the World Cup and the Ashes next summer,” Langer told podcast The Howie Games.

“If we can have an environment of great young leaders and welcome those guys back, we can be a real force and perhaps a team that’s smiling a lot more than the team was before it happened.”

Langer also lauded Smith, saying he is one of the most committed cricketers. “Steve Smith is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life. He’s also a complete cricket tragic. He’s a ripping young bloke. And what a player! As committed to batting and being great as anyone you’ll ever meet.”

Describing Bancroft as the ‘heartbeat’ of Western Australia, the former opener said, “Cameron is as elite a professional as anyone I’ve ever met. He was the heartbeat of Western Australia and from all accounts, (and) talking to Darren Lehmann, he was the heartbeat of the Australian team.”

About Warner, Langer said, “He’d played every single game of cricket. He’d play Test, ODI, T20, IPL, cricket all year round. He was being hailed as a great leader.”

Totally agreed on this.

We had GT T20 tournament here in Toronto, and almost every superstar came here.. After the match, there was a lunch area close to fence. All of us kept screaming every players name, but none of them even waved back (only D Bravo waved back). And then came Steve..  Not only did he wave back, he didn't take his lunch, came straight to us (there were 100s of us), and signed EACH and EVERY Thing.. Typical desi crowd kept throwing small bats, balls on his face, and I am sure some of them hurt him pretty bad, but the guy kept signing bats, caps, balls for about half an hour.

None, I meant NONE, of the other internationals (bloody Pollard) even looked at the crowd screaming their names.. And I have heard the same thing from other friends about S Smith being very friendly with the crowd and taking time to take selfies/autographs with everyone.. What do all us cricket fans want. Respect and love with a bit of humbleness from these cricketers. and S. Smith did do that for all of us.. compare that to some West Indians...

Respect for the game trumps respect for the fans.  SS severely lacks respect for the game - a multiple offender who thinks he is above the rules.

wtf are you talking about.. all of us Indians, Pakistanis do ball tempering all the time. Offcourse Pakistanis did ball tempering every single match. Unlike our Members of Parliament like Azharudin, commentators like Jadeja etc, he didn't sell his country ..

S Smith got all my respect.. He stood by his team, and didn't throw his players under the bus.. and as I said, he doesn't act like a god like our Indian cricketers and treat fans like human.

Might have cheated but even when he played found Smith to be very humble on the other hand Warner comes off as a complete moron to me.

No need to swear.  And all of those wrongs that other people did do not absolve him, and just because "everyone does it" it cannot be forgiven. They have all been condemned.  What he has done is immensely disrespectful to the game.

It's not just the ball-tampering.  The blatant DRS crap that pulled and the "Brainfade" excuse that he made showed what a weasel he is.  The ball-tampering issue that followed was just gravy.  I am glad he was nice to you, so go ahead and hero worship all you want - but all evidence points to him being scum.

Nice does not necessarily equate to good, kind, honest or virtuous.  We've all met the nice-in-person-but-total-jerk types.  Steve's one of them.

One cheat certifying the other lol. No wonder they are country of cheats. Below is a video where Langer whips nails off  when the ball is dead and appeals.

Warner is in your face bit not cunning. Smith is the sneaky crook with a habit of lying to cover up his cheating.Remember brainfade?

He was always nice person but should have never been made captain. Aus didn't have much other options. Warner is useless and there is reason why he isn't picked as captain. I still hope smith comes back strong next year and dominates in worldcup again.
