Stating the  obvious here...

 

In case rain wasn’t in the equation 

 

Scenario 1

For India to be batting in the 4th innings chasing a tricky target -which is atleast a minimum of 150 odd runs, Aussies would have had to score 450 runs.

 

Let us say say we got 2 full rain-free days. That’s about 210 overs out of which Aussies would  need atleast 50-60 overs to bowl at India to get them all out (obviously not accounting for how we batted yesterday)

 

so Ideally Aussies would have had to score at over 3 rpo on this uneven track and declare  to bowl out India in the 4th innings.

 

Scenario 2

I believe India’s  plan was to get to a quick 150-175 and give Aussies about 5 sessions for a target in the range of 475  runs which would make sense under normal circumstances.

 

Both scenarios have their merits and demerits obviously if there was no rain predicted.

 

However the rain forecast changes this equation.

 

We need maximum overs available now to bowl them out  and stop starts regardless of the pitch are never easy for a team especially trying to save a test match nor for the team  trying to win it.

 

We can argue coulda woulda shoulda all day but the fact that the team management did not anticipate or take these things into account cannot be forgiven regardless of what the  result would be now.

 

With rain being expected there was no logical reasoning for India to bat again.

 

This unexpected setback of losing quick wickets yesterday can also be overlooked but complacency and lack of brains when you are getting paid millions to use it cannot.

 

Regardless of the result and a small setback of looking poor in the final session yesterday , it still looks like a poor decision.

India will most probably survive another 10-15 overs.

Need 90 to bowl Aussies out in 2nd gig.

India is pretty safe unless rain washes out 3 full sessions.

Bumrah would have been overbowled if follow on was enforced. He does not bowl too many overs but he puts in lot of energy every ball he bowls.

Think Kohli knows more about what his bowlers can handle than us outsiders do. Also, he did a very nice job with field placements, bowling changes in the first innings. And- big picture- looks like his tactics for patient batting- was a good one. So, it’s apparent that he has the ability to make good calls. Let’s cheer for India going up 2-1 here and then because he kept his bowlers fresh hopefully 3-1 at the end of this series..
