M Waugh did open for some test games but yeah wrong example. I think Amla has opened in tests also but I still wouldn’t take any of the three names you have mentioned. Obviously Tendulkar is an exception by I still would have preferred him at 4. 

 

I am much more comfortable with two solid test openers for opening in ODIs also. These players will give me the best chance of seeing off the new ball in every and crunch games. Occasionally  even  if I move someone like a Yuvraj to open, instructions will be very clear that you are there to hit. Don’t come back with less than 120 SR unless some extreme situation demands otherwise. He may do excellent over say 10 games but he still wouldn’t become my opener. My middle order will have middle order batsmen, not force fittings openers at no 4. I can’t fathom any captain being comfortable with that.

Teams do try aggressive openers , one of the two, in ODI who do not open in tests, but in that case the opener is supposed to hit and accelerate. Gilchrist, kalu, Dickwella, Sarkar, Finch, 

 

Rohit doesn’t accelerate and he doesn’t not fit in my definition of a classy opener for ODI. KL Rahul is my preferred option. Doesn’t mean any disrespect to Rohit. It’s based on his playing style. 

 

We are discussing a game which can have million plus permutations and combinations. So highly likely that your choice be very different from mine.

Want and preference are two different things. He hasn’t got a chance to consistently open. I am sure all that will correct if he gets a chance. Even Sharma jee has lost us games with his strike rate. There are discussions on this forum.

 

what do you have to say about KL Rahul at 4? Isn’t that something to shut up for a top team

He is a test opener. Check his List A debut . Has century as opener and highest score at no 3.

He made it to the Indian test team by replacing Shikhar Dhawan to open. But jab kismat hi g**** to kya karega Pandu.

till that match Pujara was at 3. In Rahane’s debut match Pujara opened and Rahane was moved to 4.

 

Either ways, I am sure you understood the approach.

For me Sehwag plus Gambhir is always a preferred opening pair than Rohit plus Shikhar

Gibbs plus Kirsten better than having

Amla

 

and I can’t be comfortable Force fitting openers at no 4. How many of you are ?

But he has been caught behind 44 times out of 189 innings. That is way too high. If we add slip catch too that is definitely an issue for a classy batsman like him. If he finds a way to survive against such balls he will be even more dangerous.

You are uncomfortable with the likes of Rohit, Tendulkar, M Waugh and Amla as openers, but okay with Rahane. Whichever way I look at it, can't make sense of that.

 

PS: Also, calling Rahane who played 50+ test matches, as test opener when he opened 0 innings for India. Can't quite work that out.

Want Kohli to now go and smash 600+ runs in the remaining matches, which he is capable of. Such an outstanding batsman can't go missing on the big stage for long. Time to make amends and take his place alongside King Viv.

No problem. As I said matter of choice. We think differently. Someday we should build our teams and play against each other 

Don’t get hung up on the name Rahane, Tendulkar , Amla. these are examples.

 

start afresh and see who would you select as openers if you had to build a team today.

 

 

You remember when Tendulkar was captain, he moved himself to no 4. Must be some thought in his mind. 

 

I told you why Rahane did not open in tests for India. Below some articles which may help you understand that Rahane was an opener but for some reason Pujara was moved from 3 to 2 in his debut match.

 

If you were captain and your opener Shikhar got injured, you get an opener as replacement but later you decide like this.

Hey Rahane, I know you are an opener but I will move my no 3 Pujara to open and you bat at 4. Does that make sense?
