That out of the way, having lived abroad and in India, while Modi is inviting all these foreign premieres to unconventional locations, he has to ensure the spread of economy to these uncharted territories. In India, what I see is that the system is not meritocratic at all- I was expecting Modi government to improve it massively. Anyway its not in bad shape I'm assuming. I went there decades ago and was in decent shape. If both of them were meeting in Mahabalipuram then why waste time in Chennai. Xi's security felt it was safer traveling to Mahabs through road from Chennai rather than fly there from Chennai airport. Normally air should be safer than road. South Chennai was blocked for this visit especially the IT parks in OMR. More than anything, this will now put the town in world map, more tourism opportunities. Inconveniences are expected during such visits, Xi is a big cat like POTUS, Putin...apparently it is PRC policy to avoid chopper rides for their head LINK Then there is the problem of accommodation and airport, Chennai was inevitable. Maybe our security personnel will learn, adapt and come up with new ways to make such experiences smoother for common folk. At least now that stretch must be cleaner, more organized and roads wider with clearing of encroachments.
