Hardik Pandya fails fitness tests, Vijay Shankar replaces him in India A squad

Shankar isn't there to have impact but to give main bowlers rest.

Then let's not call him an all rounder. Better to go with specialists - 3 pacers and 1 spinner. The traditional way in which all great teams played. Which is why playing 5 specialist bowlers in home conditions against poor Test team was a pity. if at all they wanted to try out a 'seaming all rounder' should have tried Shankar/Dube in home tests than directly outside Asia.

Not able to make out this all rounder  fetish , that too to a player who has no history of taking even couple of wickets in first class games regularly.

We are simply diluting the quality of test team by this ALL ROUNDER OBSESSION .

Would be OK if Hardik was the guy with full fitness  for this NZ series  , but no way Shankar.

If Shankar can prove his worth again with the bat, I'd consider him over Pandya in Test cricket alone... Shankar can have a clearly defined role in Test cricket.. he is a batsman.. I'd hold him accountable for that... His bowling is a bonus to get breaks for the fast bowlers if you go with just 3 quicks.. just like how Ashwin's primary role was a bowler and his batting was a bonus. If they fail in their primary role, they should be sacked.

Pandya's role in Tests has never been clear - Is he a batsman or a bowler? What do you hold him accountable for? I don't think even he has the answer to it. In LOIs, such a player is useful since Pandya can regularly give you 10 overs and play a quickfire 40(25) which is a very valuable contribution in an LOI setup.

The reason to consider someone like Shankar in Tests is that you always don't have the luxury to play 5 bowlers.. that weakens the batting... Also the fifth bowler is often under-utilized, so you can instead consider the option of a fifth bowler who gives you a few overs in-between. That is where a Vihari/Shankar kind of bowler helps..

Again this is just an option to test out in an India A series.. where else can you try out different combinations without a risk.

Pandya role is that of a seam bowling all rounder, someone who is expected to score 30-40 runs and take a wicket or two bowling 8-10 overs in a day, occassionally taking more wickets or scoring more runs. He's done this job decently so far, 1 100 and 4 50s in 18 innings, a 50+ score every 4th innings, and taking a 5-er and a 3-fer. He needs to focus more on his bowling contributions, can bowl spells of 135kph+ (and occasionally 140+), needs to bowl with better control. He lacked consistency in England and thats an area of improvement for him.

After 11 tests, his batting and bowling average is 31. At a similar stage Stokes was averaging 33 with the bat and 40+ with the ball. But England kept backing him and are now reaping the rewards.

Stokes fitness is way better than Pandya even though Stokes is few years older in comparison and Stokes bowls a lot more than Pandya. I do understand you compared him because he is all rounder but both are of different quality and different fitness levels. Pandya needs to improve fitness so that he can take as much workload as Stones takes.

Stokes has improved his fitness over the years.Has had multiple injuries including being out for an entire year. He was even sent home from a Lions tour due to disciplinary issues, had injured his hand after hitting the team locker, missed a series in SL and the 2015 WC due to injury. Only after 2015 is when he became the player he is now, more so after his suspension in 2017.

Not saying Pandya can become the next Stokes, all I am saying with bowling all rounders like Pandya, we need to be patient and not to expect Kapil like miracles.

Yup, Stokes was off the field due to injureis and disciplinary actions. Haven't checked workload of Stokes and Pandya but i do think Stokes has definitely taken more workload than Pandya in all LIST A, FC and T20 franchisee cricket they have played.

Terrible decision. They should taken a proper fast bowler or a batsman. Dubey & Shankar are not all rounders. Dubey's batting is better than Shankar & is more suited to the team's requirements of aggressive lower middle order players.

Thought it was for limited overs. Yeah Dubey is not suited for tests. He should be limited to T20s & LOIs. But Shankar's bowling is no good for tests.A proper pacer/batsman would be a better choice in his place.

Does the guy even want to be fit? Looks he's content with spending time and IPL money with fiance'

IPL money, fiance?? What kind of jealous and misinformed post is this? Pandya had spine surgery in October which in many cases leads to ending of career, it is best to take it slow. First let him play T20s in IPL and later T20 World Cup, then later Test matches.

really ??? who wants to be misfit all time

Every cricketer understands his value in IPL is up if he is playing for country .

Every players knows that u cant straight away come in cricket n start performing specially someone who bowls fast. To be successful u need rhythm which only comes by playing

Sometimes we talk about injury as if a player decides when he wants to get injured and when he wants to get healed

Pandya is a must for t20 World Cup, let him recover fully. Ishant’s injury is biggest loss for NZ series.

I didn’t know he was managing his back injury for last five years. Back injury can be career ending if player is not careful.
