Pant is not a good T20 player.

he only averages 20 in 25 matches  at 121 sr  that would  get anybody dropped but icf is pinning over him because he took the unadakats  and the sharduls  to the cleaners in IPL.

he has taken bumrah, rashid, bhuvi, archer all to cleaners who have been good t20 bowlers

Pant already has as many 50s as Dhoni has .... but has played like 1/4th the number of T20 games

And Kapil averaged 24 in ODIs but still .... :cheer5:

His true potential will be unleased when opening.

He is more in the mould of Gilchrist/Jayasuriya as also mentioned by other members.

Unfortunately that won't solve any problems. Sure we may get a few extra runs in the power play at  a faster rate but then what?

Put Pandey and Iyer in the top 3 and even their averages and S/R will go up. That is not a disrespect to the Rohit and Kohli because they are at a different level altogether but all these guys like pace and score quicker in the top 3.

Pandey and Iyer have stellar performances in IPL in the top 3 as well. Pandey flopped when he was batting at 5-6 in the same IPL.

We need someone to tee off from ball 1 at 5-6. Was hoping Pant would be that guy but he has the same problem.

Samson has 2 IPL 100's opening as well but pretty sure he will flop in the middle order as well.

The goal is to give him opportunity to get a big score (in the domain of T20s) quickly to take the game away .... if he gets a 40 off 20, Ind is off to a flyer. If he gets out early, Ind still has too many overs remaining for someone to take advantage

and of course, avoid situations where the openers get a 50 off 40, get set, get out and leave it for others to do the catching for RR

Rohit or Kohli can afford to be 50(40) because they usually bat through and while chasing try to finish the game. so there is a pay off there.

If Pant gets 30(18) and we are say 100/1 after 10 and get to even 275+ by 40, how much do you think our lower order can make?

If they are scoring 50 off 40, they are not batting through but only hurting their  team

This is a T20 thread though .... Pant has test 100s in Eng and Aus so there is no reason to think he can't get big scores. Some of those who are opening now only averaged 34 in MO in 80 odd games

Few games down the road, somebody's going to bump this to embarass you.

nothing in his batting style leads me to believe  that,he should  only play tests.

Our problem is not top 3 because they are the ones winning you games. Our problem is lower order which fails 9.5/10 times when the top order fails or fails to convert great starts by top 3 including Dhawan/Rahul

Let's give others opportunity to develop their games too

That proves he has the talent which at least I never doubted even once. However I rate players on the situations under which those innings were played. In those 2 series, he had plenty of opportunities were even a 50 would have helped draw the game, win or at least delay the inevitable.

If you are talking about ODI it's a different scenario and Pant is still a work in progress there.

In case of T20 what matters is  a consistently higher strike rate with reasonable average. That's why Andre Russell is highly valued in T20. Pant has the potential to follow in his tracks.

Fair point. Not giving up on Pant. However this excuse that Pant and Pandya should not be questioned because they are inexperienced is what I don't agree with. Plenty of Debutants have played match winning knocks as well.

Once they get a relatively consistent run, they can be questions too .... and of course, their game is not perfect yet so they need keep learning, which is where good feedback is important

Yes I agree with you and @zen as well that Pant is a must in T20 because he is the only guy with the attitude to go from ball 1 in any format. However both Rahul and Rohit are proven match winners in T20 as openers. I want to see Pant and Pandya come in at 4-5 and continue the momentum. Kohli and no.6 may be Iyer/Gill to come in and steady the ship if required or play according to situation.

Pandya has been walking into the X1 pretty much in every format as long as he was fit for the last 3 years.
