While it is true that Rahul has demonstrated decent capabilities in Test before that horrible patch of 9-10 tests, it is also true that he needs to improve his composure and temperament( for examples how he threw his wicket against Afghanistan after settling down). He sure has the potential but at this moment I rate Mayank, SHaw , Gill higher than him as far as TEST matches are concerned. These three have not just consistently scored runs for Ind A and in Test when given an opportunity , their first class records are far more superior than Rahul. Even when Rahul looks to be getting back to his form and confidence, the other three should be considered ahead given that they are better players with better application as far as long format is concerned. Rahul can be considered after some solid domestic performances.

Their logic will go something like this - "Rahul is in great form of late as opener and we want to use that momentum. Mayank did great in test format in recent series but he doesn't have any centuries abroad, so with Rahul's overseas experience and a century each in A and E, he is a better pick at this time." I would want Gill over Shaw anyday in test cricket. Shaw has very loose technique for a test opener.If Rohit is unfit, I will open with Gill and Mayank.

Shaw will thrive on bouncy pitches like Aus and WI and on flatter tracks like NZ. he may, however, have some issues in SA and eng. note that even viru did not have a great record outside SC, although he had some great individual innings.

If there is Gill and Viru, I would take Gill anyday. When he started as an opener Viru's defense was okay.Gill has potential to be a great batsman.

Rohit Sharma KL Rahul S Gill V Kohli R Pant H Pandya R Jadeja R Ashwin B Kumar M Shami J Bumrah KL Rahul in similar stage where Rohit was a couple of years ago, necessary tweaks may have been made by KL Rahul, worth a go. Also Gill may be more suited to middle order.

Rohit might be a walking wkt in eng conditions, but he deserves to play since he has improved over the past couple of yrs. agree that Gill should drop lower down the order.

KLR before he got booted out of tests was going fishing outside off stump very often. I hope he has corrected some of these flaws. he has a very complete game in principle.
