The good thing is he has range of shots and age is on his side to make significant improvements.

Let's hope he makes enough of them just in time for the first test, till now he's looked awful across 5 innings (ODI & practice match) in a variety of ways. He needs to work doubly well on his fitness, even before Kohli became a fitness freak he was still a very good fielder, not a good catcher though, so no excuse for this "talent" to hide behind other reasons to not work on his running between the wickets & outfielding.

Completely agree. Talent is of no use unless one puts hours behind it to maximize the output.

The likes of Shaw, Gill, Pant, Sarfaraz are not finished products yet, there will be hits and misses. But these guys are serious world class talents and there is a need to fasttrack their progress. The only way they will do that is by playing more matches against quality teams. You can't expect perfection from these guys if you keep pushing them back towards domestic, they will sleepwalk towards 100s, 200s there. There aren't enough teams with attacks that test high levels of resilience and discipline from batsmen of such calibre. Exposure to international cricket is paramount for these guys to understand their flaws, work on it and then take their game to the next level. Otherwise they will stagnate and we lose out on our best talents.

That's debatable, playing at intl level is more about temperament than anything else. You can't just have the talent & not the brain to mold your game to the vagaries of different conditions & game situations. Based on the evidence of what we've seen on this tour, the guy is either a slow learner or thinks a bit too highly of his "attacking" game. There's a reason why there's been only one SRT & everywhere I listen to this shtick about the best talent since Tendulkar seems to have gotten to his head. I've seen better techniques & shots than him from a number of players in the last 30 odd years, the hype needs to die down & this guy need to rise up to the occasion, seriously looking at some of the posts you'd think he's already achieved a triple double (like scoring hundreds on debut in FC, ala SRT) & then some :bebored:

Yep. He could easily go the SRT way or the Kambli way.  Really up to him and his willingness to learn.

Sehwag made a great career on basis of hand-eye cordiantion and using it to advantage in stroke-play. Shaw has shown with his First class average of 61 and LIST A average of 42 with sr of 118. Also he made a great start to his test career and was able to produce results instantaneously even when the level of cricket was upgraded from domestic to internationals. He is here to stay. Everyone gets out, what matters is whether the batsman manages to score enough before they get out. Shaw does.

Shaw's only problem right now is lack of fitness. Even earlier, he wasn't the fittest player on the field. If he manages that and gets the support of a coach and captain who do not go beyond supporting young players in media statements, he will have a great career ahead of him. The batting technique will evovle as he plays more and in different conditions.

Prithi is overhyped way beyond his capability. You all will see this midget get exposed soon.

Yet to be seen what he can do at the international level - but even at this point he is 10x the batsman that a Fakhr Zaman or Sharjeel Khan ever was.  Or Shan Masood never will be.

Heck if Priyank Panchal was born few kilometers west, he'd have replaced Azhar Ali a couple of seasons ago.  Your "opinion" of Shaw has more than an unhealthy tinge of green in it, greenbro.

Prithvi Shaw: 1st man to hit hundreds on Ranji, Duleep Trophy and Test debut :two_thumbs_up:

Shaw is an extra ordinary talent, Im sure there are aspects of his game which will need constant correction. I just hope they persist with him as long as they can. Even Conventional Indian openers who looks to play the waiting defensive game have also perished to the ball that rises on  length and jags away, on the contrary here we have an attacking opener and Im sure he will sort it out with time.
I just hope he does not change his game too much just to impress a few purists, his purpose his life seems to be much bigger than that at the moment!

Sachin debuted in 89 and for almost 3 years kept "under-performing" because he was over attacking. VVS also played way too many shots early in innings in initial years - debuted in 96, but only became consistent after 2001 heroics.

When you are young, you tend to believe you can pull off anything. Young players today are just put under incessant scrutiny, let's give them some space, let them falter and learn...in the process, they will give us moments that percentage cricketers never can

True, but the talent pool and competition level in 1989 was nothing like it is today.  Talented, match-ready batsmen are banging on the door and there is little room for error.

Prithvi was always strong on leg stump, cut shots and back foot punch.
Things which he has improved in past 2 years-
1. Feet no longer goes legside when trying to cut.
2. Shortball-Have started playing pull shots but work in progess.

Still  to improve-
1. Some Trigger movement needed to get momentum
2. Forward press when playing off drive

Prithvi loves batting. This kid will definitely sort it out.

'match ready' is a myth. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, takes some time to find their feet in international cricket...even those who burst on scene with a century but hit a trough soon after. World class academies can help bridge the gap (india still lacks those) but still there are somethings only experience can teach.
