coffee_rules Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 A lot of people choose Karna. He knew Pandavas were his brothers, hated Arjuna and still chose Duryodhana to choose loyalty over Dharma. Same with Bheeshma or Dronacharya, but unlike Karna, they favored Pandavas and hence were biased in the war. Krishna, protected Dharma at all costs. But, then he is the avatar. My award goes to Vidura. He chose the side of Dharma, didn’t fight the war and held his ground. It takes guts to take a stand. Fcuk loyalty and other human traits. Have a backbone and stand up for what is right. dial_100 1
velu Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 my fav character is karna , followed by duryodhana .. duryodhana is unnecessarily vilified by our Political Correctness crowd .. when pandavas asked him to pick one among them for a macefight , he picked bheema instaed of other weaker pandavas .. in macefight , duryodhana was far more skillful , little less powerful but has better stamina ( like dhoni ) than bheema .. if krishna has not cheated , duryodhana would have surely defeated bheema
Singh bling Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 Karna is nothing more than powerful gunda of corrupt politician who gives his service because in time of need that politician helped him. Karna was obsessed to prove his superiority over Arjun. Despite knowing Arjun his brother he just wanted to kill him . This type of obsession is rarely found. My favourite is Arjun

So many people siding with kauravas. They disrespected a woman, sent cousins to vanvaas by tricking them and won’t return their kingdom once they are done with vanvaas. Why are these things not considered when judging pandavas ? Edited May 13, 2020 by gattaca
Gollum Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 Almost all characters are flawed. So I choose Eklavya. However I must confess my entire Mahabharat knowledge is from BR Chopra's Mahabharat (late 80s one, Mukesh Khanna as Bhishma Pitamah) and Amar Chitra Katha. I understand there are too many nuances, when my parents talk about it, sounds like geodesics in general relativity. dial_100 1

Vidur’s character is near perfect and flawless dial_100 1
Vilander Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 I like Bhishma he was the most powerful almost atimaharathi among mortals. Karna is the most poignant character because of his flaws and the fact that almost everyone is against him lol so greatest underdog.

The guy is such a poignant story.
coffee_rules Posted May 14, 2020 Author Posted May 14, 2020 Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug was a great adaptation of Mahabharata with almost all chars mapped with modern ones. So did Maniratnam in Thalapathi with the story of Duryodhan, Karna and Arjuna mapped. Rajneethi by Jha paled in comparison
diga Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 Vidhur & Bhishma ... 2 selfless characters who put country/kingdom above their personal stakes.
coffee_rules Posted May 14, 2020 Author Posted May 14, 2020 Is Bhishma’s story more tragic than Karna’s? As a patriot, Bhishma’s is most, he saw the destruction of his nation, by choosing to side with Adharma On a emotional or personal level, Karna’s is most tragic. His death and life is so meaningless, lived and died for nothing.
Gollum Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 (edited) Bhishma and Karna may be popular choices but I don't agree. Bishma was obsessed with his image, everything centered around him keeping his oath even if unfortunate circumstances could arise from it. Had he been a really great guy, he should have broken his oath and been prepared to carry the stigma of oathbreaker, ready to be be castigated to eternal damnation. In one of the recent versions of Mahabharat this is the exact point Krishna makes to him in one of their meetings when Bhishma tries to act all do-goody. Karna is the GOAT character, not necessarily the best person. Suffered a lot, as Vilander pointed out but he lost me at the vastraharan episode. Draupadi was a mean character (have other nasty words in mind but won't use that language) but you can't simply allow an incident like that and expect to be seen in a positive manner. Only Vikarana enhanced his reputation there, somewhat. I also don't mind Duryodhan otherwise, many good qualities which are deliberately ignored (like in case of Ravan) to make the heroes look better. Karna was a great giver but Duryodhan never objected (often it was his property that was being doled out ), and he didn't care that much about class/caste. Really all the major characters have shades of good and bad, very complicated unlike Ramayan, even Kunti/Gandhari have negative qualities. As a kid I hated Krishna but with maturity I realize he was righteous. Even he was punished in the end, his entire vansh was destroyed before his eyes, all the characters had sad endings, even the victors. Eklavya's was a short appearance but he shone the brightest among all. So selfless, so humble, so innocent, didn't hold any grudge in later life. Pure-hearted prince of the adivasis, most unfairly treated when actually he should have been in the Karna/Arjun level, possibly even higher. God I hate Drona so much for this. Eklavya is an adivasi icon, representation of the spirit of our noble tribal brethren who have remained steadfast in their belief in dharmic values despite so much injustice over centuries. Holding on to their faith must have been the toughest because life was always so unfair to them, ok now I am digressing. Eklavya's act of not holding on to grudges, his forgiving nature, we don't see a lot of that in our Hindu epics, forgiveness isn't a central theme in dharmic faith systems as it is in Christianity. randomGuy Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 Do they watch the hindi version or dubbed version down south?

randomGuy Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 Ashvatthama seems most real life... avenged his father's death... killed a bunch of enemy folks, be it in their sleep...threw everything he got, used brahmastra also.
Stan AF Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 Karnan. I myself am a Huge fan. Brought to life by the late great thespian Shivaji Ganesan on screen. The man who lived by friendship loyalty and the boon of giving to everyone even at the cost of his own life. I've never admired any other MB character more. Only treachery could defeat the great man.

Not obvious to me atleast. 2 reasons Dubbing kills some fun and Southies do understand some hindi these epics use shuddh Hindi which should be more understandable.
