India's Greatest ODI cricketer

I'll never get why Dhoni, the ODI player gets overrated so much in Indian cricketing circles.

I know he averages like 55 or something with all those not outs but what else has he achieved (as a player) to be considered our greatest ODI player ? I can't recall one good inning of his under pressure except the WC final knock. I'm not saying he's not good... he is. In fact he's a "great" LOI  player and captain but he's no way in the top 5. Anyways...

Sachin Tendulkar

Kapil Dev

Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma

Yuvraj Singh

Sachin hands down....

Here’s how I would classify the greats

Kapil- The man who invented the wheel

Sachin- The man who invented the car

Dhoni- The man who made the first mass usage fuel efficient car

Yuvraj-The guy who made the first sports car

Kohli- The man who made the first electric car

Rohit- The man who designed the first self driving car due to the incredible innovative  feats he does.

You can tie all their success to the guy who invented the car (Sachin) who will owe his Success to the guy who invented the wheel (Kapil)

Harsh, it was a complete team effort, just like '85. One can say Kapil was the one who instilled self-belief in that bunch but boy did everyone come to the party including mediocre players like Madan Lal, Sandhu, Yashpal Sharma. Binny and Amarnath played beyond their abilities

Gavaskar was the only real letdown in that tournament but I guess an exception can be made, Lloyd's dismissal in the final was planned by him and that was his only real contribution.

Don’t forget his slip catching. I remember him taking some crucial catches in 83 WC and with the bowling we had every catch counts. I can bet that our current slip cordon will drop 9/10 catches that Sunny was absolutely lapping up.

And they are severely underrating Yuvi who played a big hand in our T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup victory.

because as a player itself he was 2 dimensional and great in both formats, namely batting & keeping. Add his other credentials , he is certainly an elite

TOP 3 candidate. You can't say that about any other  player, not even Kapil dev, I mean being great in 2 disciplines.

Kapil, not only was he ahead of his time he also played a big role in helping that mediocre Indian ODI side win 2 big trophies in 80s, when standard of cricket was damn high. Win 2x over ATG WI, double phainty to Pakistan in BH, what more to ask? In my all time ODI XI, he will be among the top 5 picks along with Viv, Akram, Warne, Gilly.

Ranking:

Kapil

Sachin

Dhoni

Rohit
Yuvi

Special mention to Srikkanth and Gambo, main architects in 3 ICC (50 overs) finals and both good players for their era, both match-winners.

Standards of ODI cricket were not high then.

I am yet to put my objective opinion in but subjectively looking at 3 dimensions - unique batting talent, bowling ability, and excellent fielding capabilities, based on potential - it is Hardik Pandya

When others are confused by do or not to do conundrum, this guys does it (karke atta hai) -  like Nike the pioneer of “just to it” kind of tagline :hail:

Dhoni was a wicket keeper, captain, ATG ODI batsman and moreover lower order batsman which India didn't have before and missed after him.

Objectively w/ some subjective elements - MSD.

It is incredible to be keeping wkts for 50 overs + overseeing captaincy for a large part of his career + performing consistently in MO, one of the hardest areas to bat at in ODIs, and at Bevan’s level esp. when it comes to handling pressure, while possessing the flexibility to bat any where in the batting order

Brief comments on other players:

Kapil Dev: Relatively inconsistent but when he did well you felt good. Though was a good motivator, his captaincy was bland. You could almost know who is going to bowl which overs and bat where. In 1989, Srikant became the captain and we saw innovation relatively speaking like Chetan Sharma being promoted up the order v Eng in Nehru Cup. Chetan hit a 100 to win that game

Sachin/Kohli: Great in their specialist field. Kohli captains too but his captaincy is similar to Kapil’s without the motivating elements

While you can find players such as Kapil, Sachin, and Kohli in many of the other teams too, players like MSD are relatively rare

Therefore, the greatest Indian ODI cricketer goes to MSD at this point

Let’s see if Pandya can snatch this title in future

How many players do you know who have 2 200’s leave alone 3 and a score of 264 or world record for most 6’s or man of the match in 3 knockouts (1 knockout like situation) and has a hattrick and a multi tourney winner as captain and 4 T20I 100’s and 2 back to back 100’s on test debut.

But I thought he was a specialist lower order hitter who is a great 5th/ 6th bowler?

That’s been a ongoing debate if he is actually a bowler or a batsman

He is doing the role, he assigned to to do
