Can Hardik Pandya play as a batsman alone in ODIs if he cant bowl anymore?

There is no doubt Pandya is sure starter in T20Is. Also, its a fact that he wont be in test team unless he start bowling again.

But questions are being raised if he merits a place as a batsman alone in ODIs? Or should team look for a more proper batsman at no.6 like Pandey?

Dhawan

Rohit

Kohli

Rahul(wk)

S. Iyer

Pandya or Pandey someone else?

with how consistent our top order generally is, you need a slogger at 6, not an accumulator. If pandya isn't bowling, he will have to compete with samson/pant/ishan kishan/sky for the 6th spot

We all know that the issue won't be resolved if we pick either of the two as specialist batsmen at no.6.

But, just a thought, why not Sanju Samson at 6? His striking ability is far better than Pandey and is a better batsmen than Pandya.

I dont think Samson is a better batsman than Pandya.

Once in a generation talents like SDP are good enough to play for exciting teams like Eng .... Ind does not understand sports in general, has the safety first psyche ingrained in its general population, and therefore will usually field a boring team  ....  it should look to play boring and risk averse players (and save fans the time by not following such cricket) :yawn2: .... do not play players such as SDP, Samson, SKY, etc (when all 3 can be in an 11) who can actually make Ind cricket exciting (and worth following) .... There is no point in making a sport exciting  :dontknow:

coz sanju is a top 3 player

yes he can, every team needs a powerplayer and he is the one.

Now it depends what role does team want to give him, i think its time jadeja goes to 6 as he cannot bat at 7 and if pandya is to play his natural game leave him alone.

If u want him to play a dhoni like game my question is why ??

Yes he can, i think this guy has a lot of potential in batting but somehow he hasn't been able to deliver.

I remember the series vas aus where he was the MOS since then he hasn't done anything significant with the bat in lois.

His exploits in ipl do not matter nobody remembers Paul Valthaty.

In T20Is yes even if he is not bowling because he is an impact player who can change the game if he lasts  even 20 balls and is a gun fielder.

However don’t think I would pick him as a pure batsman ahead of Pandey or Iyer in a Odi. Don’t think he can play a big knock chasing like Pandey did last time or Iyer has recently. Pandey is a better fielder too, so if he is not bowling it makes him useless the longer the format gets. If he is bowling then obviously over guys like Pandey anyday.

I am a big fan of Hardik Pandya's talent. People may laugh at me but I think he has got similar level of talent as long hair Dhoni had with the bat back in the days. Would Dhoni had made the team in 2006 as a batsman alone? Answer is resounding yes.

Pandya is only 28 and has got at-least 4 years of peak period left in him. India must utilize him at no.6 and he can give us long haired Dhoni kinda impact with the bat.

chasing 280-300 against a quality side in odis , india 60-4, top 3 big names out, which combo will you trust to finish the game? Let us say None of the below is not an option

Iyer-Pandya

Pandey-Pandya

Iyer-Pandey

Iyer/Pandya/Pandey (only 1) playing along side someone else like Pant,Sky,Kishen,Samson etc.

Yes he can.  Anybody can do a better job than Jadhav at that spot.  Hardik will at least bowl 3-4 overs as well if needed.  Team is already filled with accumulators

“If he bowls” he will be my 4th/5th name  name in the team in LOI’s after Rohit,Kohli,Bumrah,Dhawan but I think the question is if he can play as a

pure batsman.

I think he can in T20 but a big no in the other 2 formats.

I don't think Iyer-Pandey can chase 280 from 60-4 against quality side anyways. They can chase 230-240 from that position but not 280 as by the time they get to 120-4, 30 overs will already be finished.

I will also go with Pandya in my team as Jadeja can play that innings builder role and then Pandya can come later on and smash the bowling lineup.

In a hypothetical scenario, anyone can finish the game .... Pandya has been MoS v Aus. An Iyer or/and Pandey will struggle to be one. Pandya has a test 100 in SL, a 90 odd in SA, and so on :winky:

remember we are talking about playing Pandya as a pure batsman who will not bowl even 1 over.

Logically it should be Iyer-Pandey as both are technically better batsman and can be trusted to resurrect the team from 60-4. But I would not pick a team thinking of such situations. What if team is batting first and 300-4 after 44th over...whom do we send - Pandey or Pandya? Think no.6 demands batsman who is a good striker and Pandya is the man. Having said that, Pandya played a brilliant counter attacking innings in CT Finals walking at 74/6. Without that run out who know what could have happened.

Pandey has a 100 vs Aus in Aus chasing a 330+ Score.

Pandya was also bowling in that Aus series which he isn’t any more.
