Should England enforce follow on if India falls short?

1st - India can't risk for attacking when target will to survive the game.

2nd 150 lead by 1st session of day 5 requires batting at 4.5 rpo.

When did Gill and Pant score that fast to have team run rate of 4.5? It's not an ODI game and even in ODIs scoring at 4.5 would be difficult on such track.

If pitch plays that well to give overall run rate of 4.5, chasing 150 will be walk in park in 2 sessions on such track.

I thinking more 120 overs, Indo go at around 3.75 to 4, then easy lead around 150

I just dont England have confidence to chase it, they dont want to bat last.

If it was Australia they would definitely enforce

Even in today's fielding placement Root didn't attack enough, was more worried about run containment then taking wickets.

Why will India try to attack on day 4 track? If they do, team will be all out in 2 sessions.

If england want to win this match ,they've got to enforce the follow on ,off course taking into consideration if they pick up the remaining 4 wkts by lunch

There's zero chance of them enforcing the follow on.

Archer only bowled one over at the end and he was literally on fumes. Anderson or Stokes won't bowl long spells. Leach hasn't looked even a little bit threatening and Bess got wickets but even he was on fumes towards the end of the day.

It's not about whether England will enforce the F/O or not (Most likely they wont) ,rather it's our opinion on what's the best case scenario for england to Win the game .

England ain't gonna set a target less than 420 if India have 100 overs to chase so they'll only have 1 day and a few overs on the top to get us out .

Best case is if they enforce the follow on with a lead of around 260 -270 and hope India again throw away their wkts under pressure of getting runs ,they can easily get India out inside 350 again tired or not .

They won't, but England management will look at worst case scenario for them, which is if India play positively and pile on runs at 3.75 or more then they will be in back seat.

Also this is 1st Test, they dont want to be in the field for 2.5 days continuous in the field in this weather.

My feeling if India get bowled out tomorrow for around 300 at lunch. England will look to bat out 2.5 sessions and have a crack at India for 75 overs on day 5. With no chance of India victory.

F/o will be risk. If england manage 260-270 lead they should bat and put runs on board. England should bat 40 overs and maintain 4 plus runrate then india target will be 430 to 460. 400 plus target on 4th innings will be good for england then f/o

There's just 3 days gap before the 2nd test. If we escape with a draw and keep England on the field for close to 3 days that will crush them, both mentally and physically.

If India can score at that rate, England will also chase it easily.

Only risk is tired bowlers. Apart from that, there isn't any risk. Pitch is going to be worse only.

If India bat another 40-50 overs, English bowlers will be tired and to ask them to go through another 100-120 overs without a breather may result in sub-par effort. So, the main reason to not ask to follow on would be the Chennai weather.

Though unlikely, they may also be a little worried about the unlikely scenario of India pulling up a good score and trying to get them bowled in the last 40-50 overs of the match. Remember that England lost all 10 wickets in a space of 48 overs late on Day 5 in Chennai, 2017. These things can play on your mind especially if you have been part of that match (Root).

If India bat for another 40-50 overs, how will bowlers be forced to bowl again? Deficit will be less than 200 by then.

40 overs - 100 runs scenario. Given the pace at which Sundar and Ashwin have been batting (2.5 RPO). India will end up with 350 and England will still have a lead of around 225

But even if you assume another 25-30 overs, plus 74 overs already bowled, another 100-120 overs in Chennai heat without a break won't be easy. And they will definitely like to look after Archer and Anderson and not risk an injury to any of them.

It's going to be a dust bowl now. This game is done, they can go in there tomorrow and put up 125-150 and thats it. There is no way we last a day if we are batting last.

I think they will enforce.Vaughan was saying England has to win this no matter what. With wicket crumbling,Spinners will operate immediately.

Now I have some hope for draw.
