How to stop England Sweeping

On low & flat pitches, sweeping is a low risk high reward shot. It does not allow spinners settle.

On top of conventional sweep shots, poms are also playing reverse sweeps well.

In england's second innings when root was sweeping at will, we responded with full protection on the leg side (fine leg, deep sq leg & deep mid wicket). But then root brings out the reverse sweep.

We simply cannot cover both sweep & reverse sweep and have enough fielders near the bat.

So how do you plan against sweeps & reverse sweeps? couple of thoughts

  • We need to introduce risk in playing that shot. For that to happen the pitches need to be a bit bouncier and the bowlers need to shorten their length a bit to induce the risk of a top edge when playing sweeps.
  • Or, prepare sporting wickets and go with 3 seamers + 1 spinner. less spinners = less sweep shots.

Needs 'Kumble mould'  spinners on such surfaces .... 'Quicker thru the air' sort ..... Do we have any  in domestic?

Sai Kishore is a tall left arm spin bowler known for getting good bounce. He is a good T20 bowler but I have no clue about his first class record.

Nice analysis.  But, for this series, changing pitch types is out of the question (no time to do that).  What now?  Is there a different length/drift/speed that can be bowled to counter the sweep?  E.g., Even spinners bowl short and pack the square fields on both sides.  What will happen then?

This is deja vu for oldies like me.  When Graham Gooch hit 333 or whatever it was, he just swept and swept and swept.  And then in the 1987 Reliance Cup S/F, Mike Gatting did the same thing and eliminated India.  And now this.  Only difference?  In those days, no one played reverse sweep, so this is worse.

Finally, why don't our guys sweep?  As good as Indian batsmen have been over the decades, rarely has there been a consistently good sweep-player.  Is it because our guys are so confident in stepping out and getting the pitch and driving/lofting that they don't really feel the need to sweep?  Time to add it to the repertoire?

Jaydev Unadkat?:phehe:

Seriously though, I wonder whether the "arms race" of home advantage around the world might see the renaissance of the Derek Underwood type bowler, operating as a specialist for tours to the subcontinent. (To quote Wikipedia, "Although classified as a slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler, Underwood bowled at around medium pace ...", which seems to fit the job description quite well.)

On a lighter note, I would seriously lose my s**t if India recalled Jaydev Unadkat to specifically bowl cutters on rank turners (though they will probably need Saha standing up to the stumps for that to work ...)

For newer fans (especially of the IPL type), cf. Calum Macleod sweeping Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Zadran repeatedly out of the attack, and ultimately them (and Afghanistan with them) out of the match, in that glorious 157* in 2018 ...

maybe India stop England from sweeping if they held onto catches and especially the half chances, the close in fielding by Tubster Sharma and Gill was club level.

Yeah not just close in though, unless we start catching the full & half chances again - we'll lost this test as well. It's pathetic how some pensioners are getting free ride in the coaching setup, like this is a govt job?

100% agree with no slip for root.  Rahane was pretty useless in the slip throughout.

Reverse sweep karega toh?

Edit:  I see he has a short 3rd for top edge on reverse sweeps.  I guess you just have to risk the few reverses that he will hit square of the wicket for boundaries.  Place Rohit at 3rd man and make him chase down every reverse sweep.
