As you know in the US most sports arenas are named after corporates that maintain them.

Had this been named Reliance or Adani stadium there would be a lot more outrage. Had this been named after Bose etc people would have called it a Bengal election stunt or naming after Bhagat Singh would be looked at appeasing the Punjab farmers.

There is no win here. In fact the sad truth is there is no win with any thing in India. The problem is in USA or in most countries, 2 sides have an opposite view point but for the same goal and ideology. In India it is just about blindly opposing something just for the sake of it.

Modi stadium even though I am not a fan of naming them after current leaders, at least Congress is sitting like a cat that ate the canary, even though some idiots are still missing the hypocrisy of their protest.

Actually the original name was pretty good. why would they change it from a freedom fighter and the man known as the iron man of India who took actions that unified the India we know today. That would be acceptable to all Indians no matter what their grouse with the central govt is.

For me atleast, naming after corporates is not a big thing as I'm used to it living in America. As a side note, when I was a resident of Dallas, I found something strange in how they do things. While Jerry Jones was building his knew Cowboys Stadium, there was a vote about whether or not the Dallas Fortworth Metroplex people are willing to pay a tax for its construction with Jerry jones owning it 51% and the rest of the public "owning" for name's sake 49%. This sounded to me like a copout of Jerry Jones and the republicans who want to privatize profit but publicize costs.

That was a clear implication.

My point is that I am proud Hindu, it doesn’t offend me if you keep calling me sanghi, bhakt or a chaddi (I have worn chaddis) so it is like rain over rocks.

The name of the larger sports complex is still named after Saradar Patel, which the stadium is a small part of.

China has its narrative , US has its own, Russia has its own. Why can’t India have it’s own take on things? Why should we be neutral.

This line of thinking is what makes most Indians lack self esteem and have a low opinion of their culture and history.

I have already said the optics is bad, but not as bad as equating him to Nehru dynasty. He could have rejected it and called it after some Gujarati sportsman like Vinoo Mankad

Didn't know that he's from Gujarat!

The road outside the Wankhede, if you want to go to the Garware club house /Garware stand is called the Vinoo Mankad road.

Always thought he was a Mumbai player.

I was responding to somebody else, go look. That original response was not for you. You interjected and made it about yourself.

That's a fig leaf, a weak one, and I'm pretty sure you know it.

Not until they are dead.  Naming schools, streets etc after former presidents is standard, but stadium names are monetized and have corporate names....

Folks can be against the Indira/Rajiv naming spree, and also be against this dictator style stadium naming - there's no hypocrisy there.

Btw, I am ok with naming things after Modi - after he dies.

He still remains the longest serving  DEMOCRATICALLY elected Chief Minister of Gujarat -almost 13 years -no one else is even close.

He is the first politician from Gujarat in independent India that made it PM ship DEMOCRATICALLY. He has done a lot for Gujarat as administrator in chief.

Don't allow you dislike for him to fog your mind.

Not necessarily. A highway in Dallas was named President George Bush (the senior) Turnpike even when he was alive.

Have to follow some norms like not naming things after yourself when you are the PM. The previous name suited just fine.

Again The previous name suited just fine. Naming after past sportsmen is not what we do in India

Or could have just called it Adani stadium or Reliance stadium. That’s fine as well, let the corporate who put his money and resources have the fame. Will encourage other corporate giants to build or sponsor infrastructure too.

Reliance stadium is already there in Baroda.

No but trump and Biden weren't the president of cricket association. Chinnaswamy and Wankhede are also named after their president name who envisioned them. It's just they didn't become PM of the country. It's not named after Modi because he is PM but because he was GCA president and did a lot for their cricket and this project.
