He is staying not out in the 80s and 90s. And has a 150+ in Ranji as an opener.

That’s why he has go back to Ranjis to do that . He doesn’t merit a spot in the team once Jadeja is back in away tours . Why not use that time to become a top order batsman.

this is the standard response from rat (and abetted by shastri to an extent). if some new talent comes, wait for them to have 1-2 failures and then send them packing to domestics and not select them for a while. classic examples - treatment of pant, discarding shaw after 2 bad games, and I think gill will be booted soon due to his failures against eng.

 

or, if they don't fail, rat will claim that they should "polish" their skills in domestics and send them back

Why not he himself goes back to repolish his skills?

If current form continues, he could put Rahane in a tough spot. Right now, Sundar could probably match Rahane’s production with the bat and has the bonus of being able to bowl when needed too. Rahane gets a little bit of a break because of Australia. But he can’t push it too long..

it's amazing the kind of excuses that are thrown up to justify the dropping or sidelining major talent. I remember all the pushback against Pant (esp in LOIs) in ICF in the early days, and against shaw too. now pant has come good, and shaw can do the same.

In that Shastri clip we saw him saying they have been "hard" on Pant & taught him a lesson. Ye bsdk Rahane jaiso pe hard kyon nahi hote? Now, they have plans for Sundar in domestic cricket. Why not number 5 in test team because the current No.5 is a liability.

Some people are getting free ride, there is no accountability. Time has come for Indian cricket to be red in tooth & claw, there is lots of talent & there should be no scope for passengers.

Who cares about average for 4 tests, anybody can have good average. He is not better than either Rohit or Gill, and he is certainly not replacing  the middle order atleast till England series. So where will he play once Jadeja comes back. His best option IMO is go back to FC and become top order batsman and score heavy runs.He will always be in the mix as he plays IPL and in shorter formats.

Didn't ICFers want Rahane to become captain now all of sudden he has become a pariah and has to be kicked out of the team for Sundar. Rahane has issues but I don't think he needs be kicked out  to give his place to Sundar.

Rahane is a superb captain ... but if he is not the captain then just as a batsman he is too inconsistent.

No he should not play , you don't kick out a player like Rahane for  couple of fifties from a newcomer. Rahane will go after England series if he does not perform there.Till then he is India's number 5 rightly so.

Lol most here know we can't afford two duds Kohli and Rahane in same xi

Kohli can't be dropped for obvious reasons ,so the most vulnerable is Rahane,even though if ever given a choice majority will choose Rahane over clueless Kohli to lead the side

in his last 41 tests, rahane has averaged 37. just not good enough for a top 5 batsman, unless one is playing for the weaker test teams such as WI, Lanka, Pak, etc. people fail to appreciate how long he's been rotting. apart from 2019, he's averaged < 40 in every year from 2017 onward.

 

@putrevus: I was not participating actively in ICF while the Oz tour happened, but one can praise someone's captaincy and still recognize that this player is not suited to be in the team. mike brearley was an amazing captain, but he would not merit selection in modern int'l cricket. similarly, we can all be thankful to rahane for stepping up big time in Oz, but also recognize that he's been poor for a long time. likewise for chepu since the 2018 oz tour.

May be there were some but what ICFs think shouldn't matter. TM should have the courage to treat every player equally. There should not different standards for different player. A player like Sundar, who has performed everytime he got the opportunity, should be encouraged to play more at international level, instead of languishing in domestic. There are certain other batsmen who can go back to domestic & improve their game.

Nope. Reason why he hasn't played kuch FC vricket recently is because he has been with the National side/ India A.

 

Played 2 Ranji seasons for TN - in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Was injured in 2019-20, no FC cricket this year. When he layed last for TN, opened in his last few games. Am surprised even Ashwin doesn't know this. Kohli-Shastri obviously are busy praising each other to know much about their own team members.
