My argument is they were wrong in hindsight but I wouldn’t blame them. Simply because we didn’t have any state or central policy in terms of restrictions / gatherings at any point in any state in last 2 months. The spread happens in weddings / mosques / temples and many other spots. States are expected to better understand the covid situation. Not EC. EC offered online campaigning last year but all opposition rejected. Show me any country where elections were delayed due to covid. Was it delayed in US ?

US had presidential elections and not state elections... Much easier to postpone state elections than Central. Plus main reason wasn't the actual elections but the constant rallies that our supreme leader was leading (for a state mind you) and shamelessly lauding the turnout while covid cases in the country were seeing a surge. Centre was warned that a second wave could hit anytime and yet we have mindless claims that India has defeated COVID as early as January. Vaccine supply was never ramped up despite the fact that demand was reaching 4M+ by March. As for the fact about religious gatherings... More than 70 L attended kumbh mela and yet it was allowed to go on without any pretence of social distancing and we are only starting to see its effects now. There are a million other things I can point out but I sorry if the incompetence of the centre isn't clear to you now, it will never be Stan AF, Vivek92 and Dery 3

I am sure someone can coherently explain what are specifics that Election commission was expected to do. I agree that their judgement is questionable. Election commission doesn’t organise Kumbh mela, just FYI. But it would be great of someone can coherently explain their expectation and legally what EC can our cannot do. Pollution is mostly in October-November (paraali, diwali, winter setting in etc) , not in April. I think pollution is bad all year but people have learnt to live with it. Life expectancy at age 60 is highest in India here (22 yrs iirc ) ...it means a 60 yo today is expected to live upto 82 in Delhi...
ravishingravi Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 Blame game is pointless in India. We are not tuned to manage this. Deaths are a given. Vaccination is only way forward. BacktoCricaddict 1

Would you want this lax attitude to continue for ever ? For instance, we are bound to have road accident deaths which are numerically more than covid but we just need much safer vehicles instead of driving manners ?

To be honest, this is not pragmatic reality. I think we just have to thank our lucky stars that mortality rate is low. But I wouldn’t hope for a change in our behaviour pattern. Not happening. Over a period of time, maybe. But better to brace up for what’s reality. Force vaccinate, open up. Pray that vaccination plus natural immunity works. We are through. I don't expect 180 degree attitude changes among the masses but some seriousness needs to be pushed down the throats. I'd order flyers dropped from helis with photos of dead bodies, state of doctors & policemen and info of covid guidelines being breached on such gatherings. Bring the truth to their faces. That's only because I don't want to stress the armed forces with policing.

I think having lived in India and west a bit, there is fundamental difference in understanding and approach towards life and death. For the poor and lower middle class, it’s factored reality. Odds are so stacked against them, that would rather live fully now. Plus there is faith. It’s a hard wired mindset. I do agree that pandemic will cause at least 60 degree shift in behaviour. But by and large, I wouldn’t trust us with hygiene and social distancing too much. I was in India last March when talks around COVID just started. I was totally aware and informing everyone what’s coming. But as you walk through the lanes in Mumbai, you basically course correct immediately. This will not work in India. We have better chance this time with herd immunity and vaccination. We just have to take the death numbers as they come. And hope that our higher immunity will pull us through. Hope is that middle class and above will change their lifestyle because there is bit of fear now. We know families can get wiped out.

The point of the big shutdown is to not just to stop the spread of the virus but to prepare the infrastructure to handle the influx once the shutdown ended. It was criminal negligence on the part of state & central governments which asked people to hunker down affecting their livelihoods while doing zilch in terms of health infrastructure.
