zen
Tall openers with a good back foot game, looking to play shots in tests. Link to comment
Jay
Sort of. Would be good in Australia, South Africa and n.z Not sure about English Condtions. He has struggled vs spin surprisingly but averages 70 in India. Hope it's just a blip. Vijy 1 Link to comment
zen
Barry made 300 in a day in a first class game in Aus if I am not wrong Link to comment
Jimmy Cliff
Barry could excel against the likes of Lillee unlike some of the other openers of his era. Gill has started on a promising note by excelling against a very good Aussie attack in their backyard when in the past Indian openers with big reputations have come a cropper over there in similar circumstances. Good comparison . Vijy 1 Link to comment
Sandeep99
He will fail in the next English tour. I hope we all have patience with him. He is too good to not average 45+ in test cricket across conditions. Link to comment
prudent_kreeda
From whatever little we see here , Gill mostly has a little back & across movement going back in crease or stands still while Barry mostly stays where he is or has forward movement . Tries to move towards the ball when playing out side off balls while stays where he is while playing on onside. Not saying what Gill is doing is wrong, for playing shots gives his stance a good base with his current approach. But looking at the problem he has - getting LBW & Bowled or playing away from body and getting caught in slips , could be Barry's foot movement be better for him? By moving forward and also covering the line of balls , he can play near to the ball line and also can save in LBW as he can meet early before it swings much and also impact could be outside of the off stump. I think footage mostly from Aus , would be great if we can see footage from ENG where he made tons of runs in county cricket . Soem time great players use different approach in different conditions . prudent_kreeda
This is one from Eng county but sadly too much spin bowling. Plays well on front foot when playing seam , may be that could be the change Gill may need to do for Eng conditions. However we have two canny bowlers in Jimmy & Broad , both are tall and have mastered use of rising deliveries to get wickets if batsmen come forward often and are able to keep batsmen on the back foot. DeepSpace
Barry Richards was technically correct. Gill is not. Look at when he drives, the foot moves, gets planted and immediately the bat goes past the outstretched feet without any gap between bat and pad. Classic technique from the coaching manual. Too bad apartheid killed his international career or else he would have averaged in ths 60s for sure. nevada 1 Link to comment

Gill still has to prove playing in SA, England and NZ. Even their technique is different. Link to comment

But one thing I will give credit where it is due. Our current Indian batsmen have no fear, they are not timid like the ones from 70s-90s. They will go toe to toe in terms of competing. But these batsmen do not have the technique of the yesteryears because they play too much pajama cricket. Edited April 2, 2021 by DeepSpace Cricspin 1 Link to comment
zen
Liked Gill's performance in IPL 2022 ... Hope he takes confidence from that to improve his game in all formats as he is one of the all format talents! Link to comment
cowboysfan
Gill has done nothing apart from 2 innings in Australia.he has all the talent but yet to even cement his place in any format. Link to comment

Gill is only 22 with tons of cricketing years head of him … Youngsters are judged on (and discussed for) potential … He has not even played a combined of 50 international games (iirc has played like 10 tests and 3 ODIs intermittently) Edited May 31, 2022 by zen Link to comment

Vijy
hard to compare the two. I have seen barry r's innings when he was at his peak, and there is no doubt he was far more complete than gill. however, gill has only begun his career and that's why I say it is not an easy comparison. Link to comment

It depends on a variety of factors including the series he plays in, the opposition, the conditions, & the batting position. There are not too many world class talents so players like Gill will get their chances Iirc, he missed out due to injury and is back in the squad for Eng Link to comment
