coffee_rules Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 I was expecting it to happen, wanted it to for so long. Some here had been skeptical, it seems like this is a big win against Big Pharma. It is the ethical thing to do by the scientific community. World is affected, it is not the time to think about IP. On a side note, maybe, this was the contentious issue between Bill and Melinda, leading to their divorce Bill had opposed it. velu, Vilander, Clarke and 1 other 4

BacktoCricaddict Posted May 6, 2021 Author Posted May 6, 2021 Tech transfer must be done carefully and highly selectively. I would be $hit scared if I was the scientist who developed these vaccines - esp the mRNA ones. Very few countries have the infra, knowhow and regulatory framework to make sure these are manufactured correctly. Even SII and BB are not set up to do this. If every Amar Akbar and Anthony starts a vaccine factory now, all hell will break loose. nevada 1
BacktoCricaddict Posted May 6, 2021 Author Posted May 6, 2021 BTW, should Bharat Biotech give up their patent, too?

It will affect the entire reputation of Covaxin, no? While the overall idea of patent withdrawal is okay, it has to come with some oversight strings attached - release to specific companies who have the wherewithal to make it correctly.
Clarke Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 (edited) There's been pressure for covaxin patent to be available to Indian manufacturers since Indian govt funded the vaccine development to an extent if not entirely. The question is, who will produce the vaccine ? GoI got some public orgs in line but they need to set up their facility to produce vaccines from scratch, the produce thus being many months away. Vaccine production is very diff from drug production and we've got more of the latter. Maybe that spray could be a savior. The above question applies to all vaccines, who's gonna produce them ? Partnerships will be required to ensure quality, and those are already being set up given the business potential. Patent lifting is fine, partnerships will be the difference on the ground. I reckon China can provide the numbers the same way it's producing Sputnik after its sino-shitshow. Edited May 6, 2021 by Clarke velu and BacktoCricaddict 2

Bill gates was saying that that we should not take away the free enterprise incentive to invent these vaccines.. that's pertinent esp. if these vaccinations have to be repeated every 6 months etc.

rising Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 Its good move but I don't know how it work out we already have lack raw material as India were requesting US send RAW materials so now where will Raw materials come from when existing facilities are only not able to work to capacity ? and if the quality is anyway compromised we might risk something else and setting up will take time We could end of in all sort problems if the new setup doesn't have facility for research with virus keeps on mutating their Vaccines will get outdated whithour changes. Companies are already talking about boosters now to counter mutations

There must be some other angle, probably saves taxes or something. Bezos and some other billionaire also got divorced recently. It's naive to think they take these decisions because of arguments and differences in opinions like common plebs
mishra Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) Germany at it again. First they said, India has contractual obligation to supply vaccines. Now theses mofos are blocking patent waiver. No wonder world hates Nazis. Its bloodline of same people who gassed enmass. Effin Chinese stooges in EU. Happy that we are out of EU https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57013096 Quote Germany has voiced opposition to a US-backed proposal to waive patents on Covid-19 vaccines, saying they were not hindering production of the jabs. Its government said "the protection of intellectual property is a source of innovation and must remain so". The European Union earlier said it was ready to talk about the proposal, and some states gave it their full backing. Supporters of the plan say it will allow more manufactures to produce the life-saving vaccines. They argue that this will increase access to jabs in poorer countries. Edited May 7, 2021 by mishra
