What would you do if you were the Kiwi Coach/Captain for the WTC test?

Recommended Posts

Plenty of discussions about the Indian squad and final XI, along with anxious predictions about what will or won't happen.

But how about taking a shot at the Kiwi perspective.  Faced with this Indian team, what would or should they do in terms of selection and tactics to maximize their chance of winning?

Should they play Ajaz Patel in the final XI, especially given the fact that a guy like Jamieson does allow them the luxury of deepening their batting as well as their pace bowling?

The Indian batting unit's historic vulnerability to movement delivered accurately by pace bowlers is an obvious opportunity and Boult along with Henry are obvious choices.  Wagner is a lynch pin for their bowling unit and is in there, but what about Southee?  If Jamieson is in there along with Henry, do they bench him?

How would you try to strengthen the batting unit without impacting NZ's best chance of winning - i.e. taking their best shot at shooting out the Indian top order early in the 1st innings?

Who do you bench from the last test victory against England, assuming Kane is back?

If I were NZ, I would be comfortable playing Ind v say a Aus in these conditions ... If NZ does not have a bad game (faltering at the final hurdle), it is likely to have its hands on the title

If conditions allow, I would try to play the 5 main bowlers (Boult, Southee, Henry, Wagner & Jamieson, who is also an AR) to go all out for 20 wkts. And play the best 6 batsmen in form. Jamieson at 7 and someone like Southee at 8 is a decent batting line up

If there is a case for playing a spinner, Azaz (hope I got the name right) or similar would come in place of one of Boult, Henry or Southee (whoever is not bowling well relatively)

If I were kiwi captain I'd drop Watling (out of form)  & play Blundell as specialist keeper.

I'd make Ravindra to debut instead of Cdg as an spinning All rounder.  Play 4 top quicks.  Henry Southee KJ Wagner.

Latham

Conway

KW

Ross

Nicholls

Blundell (wk)

Ravindra

Jamieson

Henry

Southee

Wagner

This is a nightmare of an XI from my POV.  But that won't happen.  Several bold picks & perfect Balance.

That's definitely an interesting lineup, "BatDeep" + 4 seamers and a couple of part-time spin options.  There's also the fact that India have a bit of a voodoo thing going on with 'new' players.

Absolutely this Ravindra guy is actually an opener & impressed NZ coaching staff in Intra squad game as well.  Scored some 80 odd I think.

I think kiwis are conservative bunch & don't go for bold moves often.

Also Watling is being clearly given fairwell which is fair enough but recent form is not with him.  Reminds me of Dhoni situation which was a tad more extreme than him.

  • Drop boult
  • Plan for Pant as much as kohli, On form pant is India's best batsman
  • Play- Jamieson-Southee-Henry-Wagner

Against Indian batsman

  1. Pujara- Bowl Jamieson from one end and Henry from another
  2. Rohit- Henry n Southee to start with
  3. Kohli
Start with Henry n southee - Henry stick to his area of uncertainety and southee bowl him at 4th n 5th stump.....he can be tempted into playing away from body at 4th 5th stump at start.
Wagner- If he survives at start, make wagner bowl short balls at him n make him hook
  4. Rahane- he also has a tendency to throw his bat at 4th 5th stump line at start.

Southee/Henry

Boult/Henry

Jamieson/Henry

Wagner is a must.

This should trigger an Indian top order collapse.

They don't need Patel. Skipper Willy should take that role. He could be the Moenalitharan for the Kiwis.
