But in India we have too many social taboos making female participation in sports much more difficult. India isn't much better than many of these Islamic countries, and let's be honest Muslim majority countries like Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Albania, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Central Asian States (Soviet legacy), maybe even Bangladesh....way better when it comes to female empowerment. How many girls did we have in school playing sports? In college? Many African countries are ahead of India as well, I often see fellow Indians looking down upon or pitying Africa when we trail most of those countries in many socio-economic parameters.

I guess you very well know India don't have one culture. North East India South India have much more freedom to women. So if you leave Sakshi malik the other medalists are from this region.

And it's not like boys in cities are playing sports all the time. cricket and football are only sports boys play that too if they find any space

Also India churns out around 200 close to 25 percent women IAS IPS every year. Cracking upsc is not an easy thing. They too face similar situation. And not to forget a good number of girls pursue modelling acting as career which again is not accepted by large section of society.

We indians may follow whatever culture but once government incentive start pouring  we forgot everything. Sportswomen these days get as much incentive as men like cash , government job etc.

How did Belgium become so good in hockey?

I see the Europeans doing well in cycles apart Ned, Germany who are ever present.

First it was Spain, then GB and now its Belgium for the past 5-6 years. Must be generational kind of thing

Which means if Netherlands win tomorrow then we will get to face GBR regardless of whether they beat Belgium or not! I mean obviously they’re still a great team but I would much rather face them over Germany/Dutch

It will be one of ger or neth imo.

Wow what a **** draw

U cant help it. 12 medallists in last two Olympics ( including mixed event). You will definitely face someone in the qtr final draw.

Sindhu vs local girl and #3 seed Yamaguchi in QF. Tough tough match, Sindhu leads the H2H 11-7 but form, home advantage, recent results in favor of the Japanese.

Going as per plan. No 3 facing no 6 in qtrs

London was the worst. So were the Edinburgh Commonwealth games. Very biased towards the Brits & Irish

I remember in london we had 4 in qf but only mary kom won. Remember an indian losing to an irish boxer.

I don't get all these swimming events. They already have 4 types of strokes ... and then some random distances 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 etc. for each stroke. Then they have open swimming. Then they have team events. Swimming is meaningless IMO. Too many medals for one sport. That way in Weightlifting they should have 1 event for clean and jerk and another for snatch.

its exactly like atheletics. Its an examination of stamina and skill. In weightlifting they have different weight categories. In swimming instead of that they have different distances and types.. just think of shooting then.. it has more medals than most.. pistol rifle shotgun ( skeet trap)  10 m 25m 50 m..  then you have mixed event for those..

Shooting has 15 medals vs 35 in Swimming. No comparison

37 for swimming:). Swimming is an universal

sport and I guess its popularity is more than shooting. It also depends how many countries participate in a particular sport and has a national federation which determines the number of events. Funnily though Since Inception in 1896 swimming had less medals than shooting. The first Olympics had the following

It's so good to see our Sailors and Rowers competing in Olympics. Yes, they mostly finished in the bottom half but for them to even qualify with our very rudimentary structures in their events is itself a huge achievement.

It also means them being among the potential medalists in Asian Games. Not a bad show for events which are hardly popular in the country.

And it's insane how many events swimming has padded itself with. I don't have an issue with Swimming being an Olympic event ... just the number of events is obscene. They can def reduce the number of freestyle events. And events like breast stroke can def be discarded.
