Shaw skill matrix

1, Ball with no lateral movement Don bradman level belt it to four.

2, Ball with bounce get hit in head and get out next ball.

3, Ball with lateral movement can't put bat to ball to safe own life.

Rohit 2.0

Bloody ..no-one has seen don bradman bat but use him to compare....lame

I am sure Shaw would feel happy, if he was called Rohit 2.0...

The way Rohit played against England against spinning ball was amazing in the recently concluded test series....I think, he was the highest run getter from either sides in that series...

If Shaw is anywhere close to him...i would take him....Atleast, we wouldn't loose home test matches

With a hint of lateral movement Rohit will dance like disco shanti.

Most of the folks here might not know disco shanthi...

I guess, only south indians would know

Exactly..  People forget how many years it took Rohit to improve his skills.  2023 WC is in India & we need a player like him to take on the bowling.  Also transition phase needs to get started now.

Agree...

No one will be finished product in the first year itself....

They need time to learn / adjust

Even Gill is going thru the same phase....

Now..its upto these guyz to bounce back strongly

Moreover...pant went thru the same phase couple of years ago...

These guyz needs to be persisted with...

I hope Gill / Shaw come back strongly...just like pant did

I am sure...you would have the same opinion about pant...

Also This fascination of tons & double tons need to End.  English players don't have 30-40 tons or heck even 20-25 tons.  It's the impact that matters.

Only in SC these soft little personal achievements are celebrated.  Even if Shaw only ends up scoring 7-8k runs & India wins multiple trophies..  That's enough for us.

Valid point but our selectors and TM value hundreds over match winning 50s and 60s. KL Rahul can vouch for that. Until the selectors stop valuing hundreds more, the need for them will exist.

Shaw did not have any issues with the short ball. Every batter has occasional issues with good bouncers.

His real issue is handling quick indippers. He can overcome it by working on this issue.

Overall ... lots more pluses than minuses.

It is a treat to watch him bat, like Sachin in the 90s and it reminds me of how much i miss seeing Sachin and/or Sehwag at the top in white ball cricket. He looks like he will be an impact player rather than one who will score bucketload of runs though and i hope that unselfish streak of his doesn't change to fit in to the TM culture.

I still want to see him facing real high pace rib cage attack & then full length teasers . If the same length is out side off side offstump , he is good at slashing it.  His pull shot is not that great , mostly plays in the air and if the ball gains a little more bounce that is risky shot .

Want to seem him vs Archer, Wood, Rabada, Nortje to assess for such a ploy .

One recent improvement he has done is leaving short balls rather than compulsive hooking, thus cutting out a possible dismissal possibility.

For Shaw  it is the matter how long he can stay , runs will come . So needs to be circumspect initially vs spinners too.

Re: In dippers , he now seems to cover his stumps more & the bat comes down straight lot more than before. If we see him straight driving /pushing past the bowler , means its a sign he is overcoming that .  Its Work in Progress . Need lot more disciplined practice for the same . Also looks like he is expecting such deliveries .  But when he tries to play those cover drives /off side shots with gap between Bat & Pad he will have again face that problem.

Re: Swing .. well no indian batsman plays that well may be except Kohli at times.  So overseas seaming pitches is an issue for all not just him.

Shaw has made some changes to his technique after the Australian tour.

There is a small back and across movement against pacers ... not too pronounced but it is there. The back foot moving towards the leg is gone.

This is good.

As you said, while playing drives on the off, there is still some gap between bat and ball. This can land him in trouble against quick indippers.

Shaw did pull Gabriel, bowling 145 k+,  quite well in his debut test. He may pull it in the air but it is usually in gaps.

I feel that if Shaw improves his blocking and leaving the ball, he will do really well.

The boy has faced near test quality attack in FC matches against ENG Lions (included Ollie Roninson etc) and WI A in 2018, and scored big runs including a run a ball 200. Spanked Kylie Jamieson - who owns IND batsmen for fun - in matches against NZ A in NZ.

But that's irrelevant, as a matter of fact. How many Indian batsmen can play the way he does in familiar conditions? What's with the strange fetish of arriving ready made to face the quickest in-dipper or a bouncer from Cummins and Hazlewood in a pink ball test? It's just insane how dense some of the posters here can be in their expectations.

When we are discussing any player, both pros and cons will be talked about. This applies to relatively newer players too.

This brings out the areas that need work.

What I am against is when new players are written off because they have weaknesses. A lot of patience needs to be shown regarding those new players who have something special about them. And Shaw definitely tops this list

Absolutely. Yeh bakwas hailing him as great breath taking bandh karna chahiye. Playing against b grade lankan bowler and playing under pressure against hazelwood starc is miles apart.. we dont need to hype him like what padosis do after one good innings like they thought Ahmed shehzad is the reincarnation of hanif mohammed and javed miandad combined.. even gautam gambhir had bradmanesque form once and he was called chhota Sachin in delhi circles.. its all about fulfilling long term potentials..

Exactly this is the reason i dont want the stupid hypes about Shaw. Good example today

We have many like Shaw who can feast on bowlers on flat SC wickets... if they can score runs in Eng/NZ or Aus thats the litmus test. Scoring runs against N grade Lankan team doesnt require chest thumping by fans- let him settle into the indian team fiorst Test or LoI, then lets talk about 10K runs... before that you just sound like a maha chewtiya

This.
