We have been saying this for ages through different threads.   4 bowlers who can't bat. 1 bowler who can bat only against certain bowler. 1 fake all rounder who hits air more than the ball. One Afridi type player. 2 chokers. One 15-minute fame player.

It is a difficult format where bowlers are extremely bankable. Someone like Malinga.  Even Bumrah is not completely bankable anymore since his injury return. He was taken to cleaners by Kieth Jamison, Kane williamson. Most recently Ruturaj literally swept him for six in the final ball.  We are talking about Bumrah one of the best white ball bowler going around. Think about Shami/Bhuvi.  They are not even one-dimensional. Half-dimensional in this format.  You have to be exceptional. Someone with serious pace and bounce or swing.  So you have to look at as a package. In that regard 

 

Thakur >  Shami, Bhuvi, Pandya.  Thakur average speed is atleast 10 km higher than Bhuvi's average speed. Plus Thakur can bowl high bouncers (regular and slow). Probably not the best death bowler. That is where India has to look for specialists like Natraj (who is not available now). Next option is Siraj. He has pace. He is at the stump all the time. He has energy.  Assessing the overall usefulness is the key to pick players. 

 

 

If you give points to batting/bowling/fielding and pick players from overall tally you would omit Bhuvi/Shami/Pandya right away.

The 2011 team had Sachin, Sehwag, Raina, Yuvi and Y Pathan in the squad, all of whom were pretty decent spinners.

 

We have three keepers in the current squad Pant, Kishan and Rahul, combine that with Rohit, Rahul, Kohli and Pant (our Top 5) none of whom  can contribute anything decent with the ball.

 

This is one of the more unbalanced squads we have chosen for any of the recent WC with Hardik not fit to bowl.

Dhoni showed the way and now, Kohli and Rohit are following in his footsteps. These players have massive brand values and corporate PR machines, which make them supremely powerful. I agree that even BCCI chief could feel helpless if he had to drop one of these. Not just other teams, but even in India historically, individual star players were never as powerful as they are today and have been for the last 5 - 10 years.

 

The problem with Indian cricket is that we never play to win matches for the country. We are always looking for star performers instead of teams that play well together and when we find star performers, we retain them beyond their years of acceptable performance. That is exactly what we have in our team today: a bunch of individual stars past their prime who cannot win collectively.

We need 3 acres and two spinners and a dobbly dobbly bowlers like Kohli. Pandya , Bhuviko chodo (leave) have a proper bat like Ishan, shardul and Jadeja. Mystery gets one more chance that’s it.
