Selection of Upendra is warranted, but I'd have preferred to see Wadkar (Vidarbha) too. solid keeper, solid batter (who can play in top 6).

Strange decision to suddenly send Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur to SA. Avesh and Venky Iyer would have been much better choices.

 

So many poor decisions by the selectors.  Vihari as late addition, now Shardul Thakur as well, when both should have been the main test squad.

While sending Thakur to South Africa seems sensible as he might be the third/fourth pacer again in Joburg on 1st test...  Which is all pace pitch. 

I don't know what's the condition of Sundar as he is missing some valueable experience.

Deepak Chahar seems like absolutely ridiculous addition...  Why not Tyagi or Avesh? 

Sending Kishan as backup keeper is also a good decision. 

 

Once again pace bowling selections are not on point.

I can't rule out the possibility of Dravid being very fond of D.Chahar as a bowling all-rounder.

 

D.Chahar has been a very poor bowler in 4 day and 5 day games, averaging around 35 ... not good in 50 over games either.

 

This is a very worrisome decision. 

 

Trundlers are invading our really effective test match pace attack.
