irfan was primarily a bowler who belatedly started to bat more in the Chappati era. Iyer is a batsman who bowls to some degree. two very diff cricketers in my book.

That is correct. But Pathan's batting is very under-rated. He has a  sound batting technique. Defensive technique as well. Even at 19 made a 49 vs Pakistan and then a 4 hour knock of 55 againt Mcgrath/Gillepsie showing technique and temperament.

yes, he was very good, as his test batting avg of around 30 shows. it does not change the fact however that he came through the age levels primarily as a bowler, whereas it's the opposite for Iyer

A bowler can maintain his batting performance level without dropping. But it is harder for a batting all rounder to keep his bowling form. So he has to spend more time on his bowling since batting comes natural to him.

IIRC He used to score quick runs often for India u19.  Was waiting to see how he goes in FC Cricket.

I am hoping he will work on his bowling too. given the paucity of multi-dimensional cricketers in Ind middle order, he can make a real push for one of the slots in the future if he continues to maintain good form with the bat (high avg with high SR) and improve his bowling

Problem with these supposed allrounder tag is they are expected to perform in both aspects and they are always pushed lower down the order while batting that makes their case weak..For eg: Iyer may be a good bat at the top of the order , but he'll always be expected to deliver at #6 as he is allrounder, this is inherent bias..If he gives up bowling and concentrate on only batting, high chance of succeeding at the top.

It doesn't have to be Lance Klusner. If he can be like collin de grahomme that is a start.  Even Andrew Symonds used to bowl a seam up besides off spin.

But Iyer primarily is a middle order bat and MP made him open to make use of PP.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is in red hot form.

Should be tried against series vs SL.

Abd when he starts playing regularly for India, he will be criticised as a selfish batsman as he normally takes his time to get going and doesn't start hitting from ball one.

If Ruturaj doesn't gets picked over Dhawan for ODI series..  It would be utter pathetic.  Dhawan is sh**** all over in VHT while Gaikwad is just piling on tons after tons

Shaw and Paddikal were scoring 100s for fun last year in VHT, Shaw scored nearly 800 runs at a SR of 145-150. None of them got a run, except for the series vs SL.

Let's see if Rutu gets lucky

Well there have been some rapid changes since last year...  Dhawan finally thrown out from T20 WC..  About time we phase him out of ODIs as well.

I hope Kohli, as has been reported, opts out of three SA ODIs. Will be easier to pick a younger team

Rohit, Rutu, SKY, KL, S Iyer, Pant, Venkatesh Iyer, Shardul, Chahar/Bishnoi, Siraj, Prasidh, with Ishan, Avesh and Saini as back ups.
