Majestic Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 (edited) The openers and backups?? Rohit as captain walks into Indian side as one opener. This leaves us with only one choice and probably one or two for backup options. The players who can be in contention are :- Shikhar Dhawan Shubman Gill Prithvi Shaw Ishan Kishan Mayank Agarwal Rituraj Gaekwad Outside chance - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Paddikal Edited December 12, 2021 by Majestic
Chakdephatte Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 I will lock Shaw. Other spot is a toss-up between Rohit and Ruturaj, since one of them is captain, he will play. Lord 1

Majestic Posted December 12, 2021 Author Posted December 12, 2021 I have a feeling that it will be Rohit and Dhawan only as long as Gill, Shaw, Kishan, Ruturaj hit a century very soon in ODIs. But for that to happen, one of Rohit or Dhawan has to get injured.
Vijy Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 I would give Shaw a long run and see how he does. almost every successful outfit these days has at least one explosive opener. Gaikwad is another interesting option, but he improve game vs pace. I would save Gill for middle order, if there are slots available. Dhawan does do well in big tourneys, but I am not convinced about his fitness 2 yrs from now. another option is for pant to play as opener. he is not that well-suited for middle order and fielding restrictions can give him license to go over the top Cricspin, Majestic and SRT100 1 2

Only 2 out of Kishan, Pant and KLR can play since we don't need 3 keepers. I feel both Kishan and Pant are not adept at SR and tend to take aerial route often. I am not saying that they are exactly the same type of player, but they are similar. Hence, of the two, I'd rather have Pant play, which means no place for Kishan. Mayank Agarwal is an interesting question. Has the game against spin, probably can do okay in opening too. However, given his excellent spin game, I am tempted to put him in MO. Something like the following XI would be a good lineup for future, once Rohit and Kohli have exited. 1. Pant (wk)/Kishan (wk) [Kishan as back-up] 2. Shaw/Gaikwad [Gaikwad as back-up] 3. Mayank/Gaikwad [Gaikwad has a v. good game vs. spin and can be a back-up in MO] 4. Gill/Gaikwad [need a player who can consolidate/attack with good all-round game] 5. KLR/?? [need to identify a proper back-up to KLR; Tilak Varma looks intriguing and can bowl] 6. Venky Iyer/Pandu [only if Pandu starts bowling and rediscovers batting form] --> from no. 6 on, batters must score at 110+ SR 7. Samad/Shahrukh/Sundar/Jaddu/abhishek sharma [abhishek, Samad and Shahrukh need to bowl more, Sundar and Jaddu need to improve power game] 8. Thakur/deepak Chahar/?? [thakur is too expensive, deepak is certified trundler and does not score fast enough; ideally, we need someone who can bowl fast and score quick runs down order. if nagarkoti or mavi do that, it would be great] 9. Bishnoi/Rahul Chahar/markande [markande and rahul chahar can bat a bit, which is desirable; bishnoi should try to learn long handle] 10. bumrah/tyagi/prasidh 11. siraj/prasidh another option is to play axar at 8 and then have thakur/deepak chahar at 9. however, this would mean no leg spin. above team covers most bases. has aggressive openers, busy middle order batters, real power-hitters in lower-middle and lower order, genuine pacers, a wrist-spin option, 6 bowling options and batting till 8 or 9. Gaikwad will be a permanent member of team X1 in both 50 overs & T20 and he can be the replacement for either of them. Can be an opener and a MO bat in 50 overs . I would prefer him to be #3 in 50 overs. Chakdephatte and Vijy 2
wanted_desi Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 Shaw should be opening in India, India needs someone who can be 49(35) type of player in the start, the way Sehwag was. Vijy 1

Both can comfortably clear the circle without the worry of many fielders on the boundary. The fact that Pant always goes aerial, it may be an interesting tactical move. Vijy 1

No matter how many runs Kishan, Shaw, Venkatesh Iyer, Gaikwad scores, they will not make it to top 3 because of our senior culture. You seriously think captain Rohit Sharma will drop himself to middle order? Rohit will score big with Namibia, Scotland, Ireland, Afghanistan and choke against better teams. This will happen until Rohit and Kohli are dropped permanently. This is a reality everyone better accept. Rohit Sharma will be worse for team India than Kohli as he is captaincy with immense pressure that Dhoni and Kohli did not have. Expect team politics to run rampant into 2023 Would rather trust a 5 time ipl winner over someone who hasn't won **** I 15 years. Make no mistake, if rohit messes you selections lot of us here will throw a lot of expletives at him and put in a request to bcci to sack the fat lardass. Edited December 14, 2021 by Jay

HamHindustani Posted December 14, 2021 Posted December 14, 2021 A captain vulnerable to incoming ball cannot open. Rohit is a big wicket, captain and hence should not be opening. Should come at 3 with Rahul as one opener and Gill / Shaw as the other one. Which team has won a WC with the captain opening the batting?
