Agree with the point of setting an example and using a domestic car which could have most of the safety/protection features as the Maybach. If not now, maybe the future PM uses a domestic one in the coming years while a world class product is readied.

Lol this 12 crore is just some left wing writer adding masala. Reminds me of 51 warships article when Obama visited.

the price is around 4 crore. Its not his car. It is owned by the state and will be used by future leaders. It replaced a BMW 7 series which was bought many years ago and was also used by many leaders.

Safety especially is of top priority.  The Tata Safari and Mahindra variants have been incorporated into the indian police forces and armed forces in great numbers.

Not long ago the Ambassador was good enough to be the official government car. Didn't it use to have bullet proof windows and some other security upgrades? Now none of the much improved, latest model cars are deemed fit enough for official status. Very sad. But based on the security angle which I hadn't thought about, I think the choice to go with Mercedes is fine.

Clearly Sorabjee is not the sharpest knife. Maybach has a V8 4l engine. That cannot be more than 20 lakh rs and probably more reliable than the crap Mercedes puts out. Platform is not fancy either. It is a doable project but does not make economic sense to build one copy.

There is a market for sure, 543 in Delhi and many more across the states and that's just elected politicians. Not all of them will have top of the line model but a modular approach can be considered like they do in case of personnel based security details.

It will require a powerful luxury sedan to start with if the specs such as getaway speed are to be met, which our manufacturers don't build currently.

You're correct on the security angle, that vintage dump was a product of socialist times. I doubt it'll pass current crash test regulations, let alone the various criteria for a head of state vehicle.

I can sense what irks many people, its the disconnect between society & the elites, whether celebs, industrialists or politicians. The top strata is exposed to best in class treatment in each case, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Lutyens bungalows, Antilla or the armored german sedan etc all seem unreal in a low income country.
