Indian players who played, did well, and yet were discarded

I thought it would be interesting to discuss players for India who meet the following three criteria:

(1) played for India at the international level (any of the three formats is fine; Tests are slightly preferred)

(2) did very well in at least the statistical sense (although it can go beyond stats)

(3) despite meeting criteria #1 and #2, they were still discarded for known or unknown reasons

 

In other words, please do not name someone like Amol Muzumdar (does not meet criterion #1) or your "personal favorite" who did play for india but did not do well (and thus does not meet criterion #2).

 

I have listed a few of my picks below; for now, all of them are Test batters.

 

1. Deepak Shodhan: admittedly a small sample size (3 tests), but his 100 came in fairly difficult circumstances. didn't do badly in other two tests. overall career avg of 60.

2. Madhav Apte: in the era post-Merchant and pre-Gavaskar, we hardly had any good openers. And Apte did very well in Ind (vs Pak) and away (vs WI), and yet got discarded despite finishing with a career batting avg close to 50 in a small sample size (7 tests)

3. Praveen amre: did a gritty job against SA in SA against a dangerous attack, did not do well in SL (but was not terrible), and did quite well in Ind. Given that Amre played in early 90s, when our batting was still unsettled, I think he was discarded too soon - finished with batting avg of 42.5 in 11 tests.

True, there is a case for Karun to have played more tests especially in SC given his expertise against spin. got discarded after a couple of failures

Amit Mishra in LOIs. Was the MOTM and MOTS in last ODI series he played. And has done well in T20s in both IPL and for India.

Against the WI right? Just fell off the selectors' radar for no reason.

Dinesh Karthik was a fine player/finisher but 2019 WC semi final failure and then he was discarded. Preferably, he should have batted down the order in that game and MSD at 5.

 

He had the skills which could have been utilised better by this team. Also his T20I stats are pretty great.

karthik had umpteen chances and comebacks. no one could say that he has both great stats and too few games in ODIs/Tests (my criteria #1 and #2). in t20s, it is somewhat different.

yes, I think mishra deserved a longer run in ODIs and T20s.

no their was a reason, he wasnt great against pace and his bouncer issues were worse then raina. 

Dhoni had more faith in Raina n rohit so he backed them n rightly so, they had much more quality

he was also an outstanding fielder but his 1st skill was lesser then his competitors , he also use to get injured on wrong times

was slow through air and wud have struggled overseas which is why no captain coach backed him, he was playing form ganguly days .

His bowling was suited to indian condition and he still can bowl better on slow wkts then guys like rahul chahar but  was just limited due to his pace in air ( a problem even kuldeep has and working on it)

Did well in WI and okay in SA. Both Ashwin and Jaddu were also terrible in SA.

 

Atleast should have got some chances to prove it.

 

Kuldeep did better in SA and NZ than India.

 

Atleast these guys can beat batsmen in air. Darters depend on pitch more. Ofcourse ideally both should vary pace.
