zen Posted May 4, 2022 Share Posted May 4, 2022 (edited) This tapping for singles needs to stop (appears to be mostly a specialty of meek stats focused, as if only stats make them relevant, Indian players). T20 is a format designed to promote risks (runs scored by a team are usually more than the balls) and hit boundaries. A team can afford to play 2-3 dots if it can hit a couple of boundaries. T20s is a format for Srikants, Kapil Devs, and so on type of batsmen, mindset, & approach. It not designed to be played like how a Gavaskar or a Amaranth would approach their game - i.e. minimize risks and set your team for an avg total (If that is your game, quit playing T20s). In a format designed to encourage players to express themselves and throw caution to the wind, these guys want to minimize risks!! T20s is a format where a Kapil Dev bats at 3-4 (not a Amarnath) It is frustrating to watch senior experienced batsmen play with meek mindset, tapping singles to run themselves or their partner out. Once in a while it is ok. But to do it habitually and when even fielders are aware of it is dumb. Change the mindset - think about how many boundaries you can hit in an over (not how many singles you can tap)!! Calculate runs in terms of boundaries. zen Posted May 4, 2022 Author Share Posted May 4, 2022 Also need to move away from the outdated “roles” cricket. Every batsman’s role is to finish the game for the team when at the crease. The higher you bat, the more freedom to take risks (wkts in hand). The lower you bat, your approach depends upon the situation. Apart from the openers (who get a fixed situation i.e. start at 0/0 in PP), every other batsmen should be flexible enough to bat anywhere. No anchor or slogger bs. Every batsmen should play like a finisher. If he gets out, the other one takes up the “finishing” job. A “finisher” plays the situation not the role. Texan Posted May 5, 2022 Share Posted May 5, 2022 Tapping risky singles and risking runouts of big hitters is one of the most overrated plays in T20s. The same guys then refuse singles in the last over to hog the strike. Dhoni basically pioneered this method and was a big proponent of it during the World T20 in 2016. We tapped and tapped and tapped and tapped for singles plodding and prodding our way to 192 in the semis and then Windies batters just blew us away with merciless hitting and showing us how it is done in T20s. Dhoni is the most overrated t20 batsman of all time. In order of being overrated : Dhoni > daylight > Moonlight > tubelight > Marie lite > electrolyte > Tuk tuk Sharma > Kohli.
