there is no real backup if we talk about someone who offers explosive middle-order batting + bowling at peak speeds of 140 kph.

backup will always be worse than main guy in atleast one department.

Venky Iyer can do the job in T20. Can bat quick and bowl in middle overs.

There is no direct backup for Pandya (based on his current form).
Venkatesh Iyer and Deepak Chahar/Shardul Thakur combo need to be played to come close to 1 Pandya.

Based on last year's form we had too many  lol. He didn't bowl. Tuk tuked in both crucial games.  Form is  the deciding factor.

In t20s perhaps. not convinced about ODIs.

in ODIs we can pick Chahar or Thakur at 7.

seems a bit high for them. also, I don't find thakur's bowling convincing for ODIs. would rather see someone like Sundar or Bawa groomed for the future, but this won't happen anytime soon

That is Jadeja's slot ... Does not solve the quality 6th bowler issue

Sundar has to assure availability first. Most frustrating cricketer.

I was talking in terms of pace AR. For spin AR we have many options.

Bawa can be groomed yes in future. For now only option I can think is Dube. But his bowling is unreliable

Jadeja can be moved up or we can play other batsman who can bowl spin (like Hooda,Sundar)

forget India..even in world you will find it difficult to find replacement of in form Pandya..

Great striking power\finisher+140 kph hit the deck bowler(impactful)+good fielder...these combo is difficult to replicate..there could be some bowlers in the world with great striking power but wont have consistency of Pandya..plus he has matured well after this last IPL..

I guess Ben Stokes is similar to him but he retired from LOI..now lol..Flintoff kind a player is not easy to find..

Having seen the players tried during SDP was out with back injury..I feel Venky Iyer could have been given more chances..

and we could try chnaging strateky a bit for team's combination..find a very effective spin bowling allrounder(Jaddu is becoming more of a batsman AR now)...and get proper hit the deck bowler..

or may be 2 decent bowling ARs to give cushion to middle order..

Out of the younger lot..Raj Bawa + Hanga need to be seen how well they do in future..

Have heard about Mohsin khan that he can bat too..may be he can be groomed too..

D Chahar..seems to have good temperament but his injuries makes him not reliable..could have been groomed for a better batting role+swing bowling AR..then you can get one specialist hit the deck bowler

That's like picking Woakes for replacement of Stokes. :burnout:
Pandya is seen as 6th bowler, if we pick Chahar or Thakur at 7 then Jaddu needs to take responsibility of 6th bowler and no 6 batsman. Plus from no 8-11 we need to select bowlers, which will strengthen our bowling, but batting will be a lot weaker (considering the present form of Kohli and Rohit).

these kind of players are critical to take our LOI cricket to next level.. having bowlers who can contribute with bat at 8,9 with high strike rate will help us to go bang bang like Eng did for last few years..

Exactly !

Bawa should be groomed.

He is a stroke-playing middle order batsman and a hit-the-deck Fast-medium pacer too.

In the future maybe Raj Bawa

Is this some other Bawa. Or that U-19 guy whose only noticeable batting performance came against minnows and only bowling performance in final. Batting has some potential but not Thakur level. Or am I the only one?

His batch mate Hangargekar is surely a better prospect. Mavi, Mohsin are better as well.

As a good mod/ admin friend of mine would suggest, Krunal Pandya.

disclaimer: The mod  may or may not be Krunal Pandya himself :)

His bowling angle..Iirc..can make him a difficult customer..he can master the bowl to just hold its line

I think previously we were struggling to get pace bowlers in India..forget about pace bowling allrounders..now we have started seeing emergence of pace bowlers..This is Phase 1

Phase 2 should follow soon..as more and more pace bowlers emerge..you will start seeing variety..hit the deck..skidders..seamers..swinging etc..even more left armers..with more and more of these coming..you will start seeing bowlers who also know how to bat well..more numbers will hopefully provide more options..

its not set in stone though..but hoping quality and variety also comes with more quantity..
