Why chasing big totals in 4th innings has become easy in last few years?

Have been watching since 2019 there have been many matches where pitch doesn't deteriorate at all in 4th innings. We expect pitch to break down as time goes but it actually gets quite flat and runs are easy to score. Is this heavy roller effect or something else?

One thing is similar. All these looked impossible to chase it down but some were done quite easily.

Those were all great wins and innings by players and i am not downrating them at all just thinking why pitch doesn't deteriorate as much as it used to before.

Edit: Put up all the matches where team didn't look they will chase it or chased the total quite easily

If you include sa's chase vs India then also include root's chase in the 1st test vs nz at lords.

I wasn't going to add SA's chase but they chased it down quite easily and they looked like they could chase 300+ as well at that time against quality bowling lineup. I forgot root's innings will add it.

Dussen was clearly out.he was caught.  Not given

Midget piwtersen was our earlier at 57. Not given.

But yea. Regardless man pitch just got flatter and flatter.

No idea what's going on.

What not given we had reviews as well....  These are silly excuses...  Saffers were virtually in no trouble in 4th inns.

Those are part and parcel of the game. You are saying decision in past has never gone in favor of any side? How many times they went on to chase it so comfortably?

Dussen was caught early. It was a clear catch. 2 more wickets we would have finshed their tail. They did cheat. That's why kuli and ashwin yelled at the mike.

And pieterson was 100% out early on 57. Also puni dropped him lmao.

Safrica were in no trouble because pitch got flatter and flatter to bat on.

Only demented recessive idiot like putridevus still doesn't understand this simple concept.

If pujara and rahane could score 50s in the second innings then rofl the pitch was getting flatter. Period.

Not only the pitch, but the ball itself makes a difference, maybe they age different than earlier

Main reason -

lack of a kumble , warne or Murali ( wrist spinner etc ) coupled with good aggressive t20 style batting .

pant chasing down aussie target to win us a series was a good example . So is baristow over india . Teams who bat positively against opposition teams without good wrist spinners tend to do well .

pitch - seems like pitches don’t break easily outside of india . Icici pitches committee rates a pitch poor if it breaks from day 2 or earlier . Also variability in bounce has gone away on 5 th day . It could be that same pitches are being used for t20 and have a harder underbelly to maintain consistent bounce . Expert curators in England australia etc seem to know how to make good pitches .

lack of ability to play good swing / seam bowling - most matches I saw , I noticed that teams batting first have had it harder as the quality of seam swing bowling is the best I have seen in last 30 years . All teams can use overcast conditions and fresh pitch to their advantage . But the same bowlers get almost no reverse swing and once pitch is flat , they become cannon fodder for the batters . The current match in galle was in a way set up by shaheen Afridi . Note the poor first innings score of Sri Lanka .

Its because of climate change, all that CO2 is holding the pitch together and making it easier to bat. If test matches were played for weeks, the end result would be the pitch resembling a bowling alley/snooker table in terms of smoothness.

PS: yes, you're responsible for those emissions

So, it should get easier in Delhi  to chase, especially during stubble burning season or during Diwali

its a bit complicated, some types of particulate matter may hinder CO2 from holding the pitch. Dr DiCaprio & Lord Prince Harry are researching the issue from their hotel room in Chandni Chowk.

When the unfancied Shai Hope & Brathwaite scored 330+ on last day against Broad & Anderson.. that was the begining of this trend

There's an easy, grassroots solution.  By growing natural, organic grass on cricket grounds, you can get the natural grassroots to naturally sequester the carbon, keeping it away from the pitch and allowing it to naturally turn more on Days 4 and 5.

Aise bhi ho sakta hai kya?

Haan ... naturally.

Let teams try that against Axar and Sundar leave alone Ash-Jaddu in India.

as our captain would say come to India :)

it’s the ultimate test tbh. Respect for Ro :hatsoff:

2 reasons according to me

1.pitches are being made flat good for batting (even best to bat on 4th nd 5th day) supporting t20 cricket

2. ofcourse bazball theory ,a lot of self belief due to attacking cricket in t20s
