Picking players for Team India from the highest scorers or highest wicket takers' lists is indeed a wrong thing to do.

 

The better way is to create a pool of players who are the TYPE of players who do well in international cricket. 

 

And then choose from that pool based on performances in A-team games, Irani Cup,  Ranji Trophy,  IPL, VHT, SMAT etc. depending on the format.

They get millions for what?they should certainly do more than mere stat lurking

 

Filter out performances in various pressure situations for bowlers and batsmen, special attention should be paid to genuine pace bowlers of 5'9/10-6+

 

And if he's trundler chuck out <5'9/10,and never promote them unless they are quality bats

SMAT has an interesting rule whereby if two teams are tied for points, it's the head to head match that is considered instead of NRR.

Last IPL,he played Umran with so much ease that no one else did

Umran being raw is another thing,but still playing those beautiful shots against consistent 150k deliveries is matter of discussion,that is why he comes into picture

 

He is only undone by his inconsistency,like many others he too has weakness against moving ball,but sure has skills
