Why are Indian squad selections so random?

Never understood the chopping and changing. Also mixing formats

Why Patidar and Tripathi for BD series when Sanju was barely given a game, no one knows.

Similarly, Umran dropped vs BD.

Sen and Shahbaz were not taken to NZ because they were included vs BD.

But quite a few seniors are in both series.

Why cant they give 10 match run to Umran..he seemed the best pacer in NZ for us..

why are they thinking Umran vs Sen..why cant both of them play together..

Didnt they see both of these finished Saurashtra in  firey spells when pkaying for ROI

Gadhe selectors!

Selectors (and seniors) think they both will leak runs while bowling at high pace.
If only one plays, then it will be easier to plug the runs by using medium pace swingers.
Shikhar Dhawan was looking disappointed with Umran when he gave 3 wides in his first over (struggling with crease landing), while he was expressionlessly calm when DC was leaking boundries after boundries.
Didn't watch the match later, but I doubt Dhawan would have given any positive feedback.

If they fear playing them together against BD too then against whom they will

play them..its about giving maximum opportunities to them..

They need to be bold..India already qualified for wcup..more and more natches need to be given to these guys..

trundlers also leak runs as seen against england in semifinal..or even Litton Das took them to the cleaners..

Pak doesnt hesitate to play the agressive pacers together..

BD series is the best chance to play then together..

Problem is with phattu mentality.
There was no need of Shami, Shardul, Kohli, Dhawan, KL, Ashwin and Rohit playing the ODI's/Tests, they should have trusted the likes of Pujara, Pant, Shreyas , Ishan Kishan, Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav etc to lead the batting/bowling attack. That's how you develop the responsibility.

Imagine if we had a pace bowling attack of Kuldeep Sen, Umran, Tyagi in ODI's/Tests guided by Siraj as the spearhead. He would be able to easily relate to their experiences as he has just crossed that phase, plus this will also give him a different perspective of how to help out others instead of just taking instructions from seniors.

But as now everything is WTC, WC related....our "selectors" will not leave a chance to ensure they're present in every Tom, Dick, Harry games.

They should look to plug holes in the starting XI of the 2023 WC rather than pick and choose players at random or ask what somebody did wrong to be dropped.

Likely starting XI 2023 ODI WC:

1. Dhawan (unlikely to change)

2. Rohit (c)

3. Kohli

4. Iyer

5. Pant / Samson (wk)

6. Pandya

7. Sundar

8. Jadeja

9. Leggie (Bishnoi / Chahal) or additional pacer based on conditions

10. Pacer (Siraj / Arshdeep / Umran / Shami / Deepak Chahar / Thakur)

11.  Bumrah

This should be our starting XI. Batting till 8 with four lefties. Three pacers and three spinners - each of a different kind.

Back up : SKY / KL / Gill, Samson, Pacer 3, Pacer 4

What needs to be figured over the next 12 months :

- Figure out who your first choice keeper is... Play both Samson and Pant in all games

- Who is your first choice wrist spinner - Bishnoi / Chahal / Kuldeep.

- Identify your top 4 pacers - Bumrah, Arshdeep, 3? , 4?

- If the above are Chahar and Siraj, give them more game time.

- Play Sundar up the order at 5 or 6 on some occasions, so he can display his batting abilities. He often gets stuck with tailenders in all formats

Amidst all this, they drop Samson and Gill, pick Kishan, Patidar and Tripathi out of nowhere for ODIs... KL comes in just because he is VC (no idea why this is even an official title).

The same nonsense was displayed just before ODI WC 2019 where they keep on trying players and then suddenly discarded them and picked randomly for the WC out of blue.

Infact the exact same thing happened for both T20 WC as well.

This is becoming a failed pattern.

Why is so hard shortlisting 20 players and give them game time on their respective positions.

Bumrah/Shami/ Jadeja/Pandya/Pant are all missing these key games and come near the world cup , they all will be back and undercooked.

Add Ruturaj now.. that's 27.

I don't think anything will change in 2023 World Cup. But assuming Rohit and Dhawan retires right after 2023 WC, we are looking at Gill, Shaw and Ruturaj as opening options.

Adding Ruturaj will add up to further complications.

TM should go on pruning the list to max 20 players.

Infact players like Ishan, Samson ( if not in TM plan due to overcrowded middle order), Hooda, Axar, Arshdeep, Ashwin ( assuming his white ball career is over) and newbies like kuldeep sen, Patidar, Tripathi etc. shouldn't be selected at all so that precious game time is not wasted.

My list of 20 players that should get all games before the ODI WC.

Batsman (6)

Rohit, Dhawan, Gill, Kohli, Iyer, Sky

WK(2)
Pant, Rahul,

Allrounders (5)
Pandya, Jadeja, Washington, Chahar, Shardul

Spinners(2)
Yuzi, Kuldeep

Pacers(5)
Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Prasidh, Umran

Harsha bhogle is the only analyst who dares to be somewhat critical of selection mess. Needs to be careful haven't learnt his lesson from last time I guess. :phehe:

Rohit, Dhawan need to be dropped. Both do not give any confidence at all.

Dhawan needs to go not Rohit.Rohit will be just fine as long as he goes back to being himself. His game is built on slow start and then finishing things. He needs to be complemented by a young fast starter.
