Majestic Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 (edited) Today, they have selected Deepak Hooda instead of Samson. I don't see any point of selecting him in Indian ODI team. We are unnecessarily increasing the pool of players here. This is not a right preparation for ODI World Cup. Hardik Pandya is a given at no.6 in ODIs and if he is fit and bowling then there is no question on his place. In case he gets injured you have Washington Sundar who has got good temperament, improved his range of shots and seems to have perfected in timing the ball well too. He is your backup for Pandya. There is no need for Hooda just for the sake of getting the balance right in today's game. Moreover, you will also have Jadeja at 7 and Axar Patel is also there as backup and he is in Bangladesh squad. So, what is the need of trying Deepak Hooda here in New Zealand? Why not go with six batsman, analyse them after this series (3 games) and then make decision on which all players you will move forward? Now, what they have done is rejected Samson unfairly after first game, he isn't in Bangladesh squad also and then the home series vs other teams will start where the main players will be there. So, I don't see Samson getting chances anytime in recent future in ODI format. Only if Rahul/Pant get injured or decide to rest again in ODI bilaterals for the orange Cup race in IPL and the home series vs Australia, Samson has a chance but come the World Cup they will go back to Rahul/Pant again. What we need is to strengthen the pool of 15 players that will go into the World Cup and make them world class rather than trying to give everyone games and instead increase the count to 30 good players. zen Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 We don’t know what dynamics would be in play post IPL 2023 esp. due to injuries and form. I think the squad could be narrowed post IPL.
zen Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Risks: * Rohit gradually fading away in both form and fitness * KL could lose stream * Bumrah is injury prone. Expected to make a comeback during IPL where he could get injured again * Jadeja too has become injury prone * Many bowlers run the risk of breaking down Don’t count the chickens before they hatch! Don’t go by assumptions that because the WC is in India, these old guys will magically perform and that too at the performance requirements of 2023 WC where many teams could bring new ideas to the table. Heck, the IPL bullies like KL Rahul and Harshal Patel flopped in T20 World Cups and before anyways so making decisions based on IPL for 50 over World Cup is an absolutely clueless thought.

IPL would have an impact on LOI selections esp. where form and fitness are considered. The suitability to a format of a player, unless new, is known, therefore, form and fitness are evaluated. It is not like a player automatically gains or loses form and fitness based on format.
cricketfan28 Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 seniors are injury prone need proper replacements just in case, gill for sharma etc. nevada 1

You don't need a pool of 30 players to cover up for injuries..18-20 are more than enough. Further, if by any chance, you are expecting that this team management who didn't had guts to drop the seniors based on form in T20 World Cup will think of dropping them from ODI World Cup which is only 11 months away from now, then press ctrl+ Delete in your mind. The chances of that happening is not even 0.00001%. Also, it is true that some players do find form based on format because the ODI format suits them. We need to look to develop Washington Sundar as the backup all rounder into a world class player till the World Cup rather than equally giving chances to Sundar, Hooda and Axar for the backup option of Pandya and Jadeja. If you want to give chances to Shahbaz, Kuldeep Sen etc then use them in T20Is not in ODIs as this is our golden chance to win the World Cup in a more favourable format in home conditions. India does not have a decent pool yet (esp. considering how players get injured and many players have one question mark or the other) so the first step is to work towards creating the pool. The picture would only be clear closer to the world cup, which would be after IPL where a considerable amount of intense games would be played, testing the players both physically and mentally. For e.g. England had many of its key players missing both just before the World Cup (Bairstow, Archer, etc.) and during the World Cup (Topley, Wood, & Malan. It had to bring in Jordan & Salt in the knockouts). Majestic 1
Vilander Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 I think the intent is to test many players and make season long transition replacing some big older players.

Jinse T20 World Cup me kuch transition nahi hua wo ODI World Cup me karege? Another disaster coming next year. We will try 40 players pool and then select the same 11 which will have Rahul and Pant and lose the World Cup because we didn't developed them into World class and instead kept picking players randomly..
jf1gp_1 Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 It doesnt matter whom we play in bilaterals. KL, Rohit, Virat, Dhawan will all be in WC squad and atleast 3 if not 4 will play. Forget WC 23. Swag, raki05 and Majestic 2 1
Lone Wolf Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Better be happy to see young guns getting chances.... we ain't winning WC with spinners like Chahal Jaddu in XI... And a expired opening combo raki05 and express bowling 2
vvvslaxman Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Actually our batting pool is much larger than this. Patidar, Prithvi shaw, Jaiswal, Sarfraz haven't been tested yet. Even in under-19 world cup Sarfraz played crisis man role. Even oldies like Tripathi are doing good. raki05 1

There is no reason to think that this Indian team can't win the ODI World Cup. T20 was a different format altogether and we don't have the firepowers nor the thinking to lineup the best combinations. Our thinking aligns with the ODI format though.
Pollack Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Indian TM after rwading ICF be like: BC chance de toh problem naa de toh problem. sandeep, raki05 and Clarke 3
vvvslaxman Posted November 27, 2022 Posted November 27, 2022 Best way to select team is when you have far too many available is choosing them based on roles. See who will be suitable for specific roles and pick them. If there are 8 openers available pick the best one especially someone with X factor.

Sky is 32, Hardik is 29, Sanju, Shreyas, Kuldeep are ~28, even deepak chahar is 30. Majestic and Lone Wolf 2

You can give 50-60 games non stop to Chahal Jaddu doesn't mean they will run through teams in WC. Bumrah I am not sure how he will fare after injury... He has been a mediocre ODI bowler in last few years. Siraj will be dumped for eggspeience of Shami. Combination is already set according to Dhawan so there is no point taking about it. raki05 1

Looks like Indian cap has become pretty cheap since the IPL has settled in. Feels like we were unfortunate to quit cricket in teenage just because our seniors and family members said, there is no chance for us reaching to that level. Nevertheless, will tell my future kid if he has the same obsession for cricket to keep trying, "IPL tak to pahuch jaoge hi".....

Jaddu is very good in ODIs especially for Indian conditions. Batting and bowling both good. Only Chahal is debatable and his place is not sealed..they can replace him like this did in T20 World Cup.
