Jaddu most probably won't make it to 100 Tests

Does that mean he's worse than Harbhajan?

Was Zaheer worse than Ishant?

Rahane's not done yet :nervous:

On serious note, Rahane played more LOI cricket and IPL so workload was more.

I didn't get the actual point. Even if Rahane didn't played LOIs, he won't have played 100 tests because it is not like he skipped any test series due to workload reason. To get to 100 tests, he would have to perform longer in Tests probably a year or two more than Pujara. His matches tally was lower than Pujara when he was part of the team.

Rahane 's workload was more only during 2013-16 when he played LOIs too.

Zaheer won India a test series in England. He bowled on some pattas at his peak(2007-11) and was genuine strike bowler. He is definitely better than Ishant. Would have averaged 29 had he played in Ishant 's era.

You mean in context of determining quality by 100 tests? Well not playing 100 tests can be down to other reasons as below :-

Jaddu won't play 100 tests because of injuries and competition with Ashwin for overseas spot of one spinner.

Zak had injuries in first half of his career and pacers generally don't play 100 tests as much. 70 is the usual standard for them.

yeah they are similar age though. Pujara was brought back after bashing county trundlers. Rahane can do the same though its harder for him.

Pujara shouldn't have played 100 Tests too.

Naah Rahane is not coming...Don't tell me I will be forced to retire from watching cricket because if Rahane comes back then I won't watch. :p:

So far Pujara (recent addition) leading Ishant (previously universal pick).

By the way, we will create a new thread when KL Rahul gets there, probably in another 6-8 years.

It takes special skills to beat Ishant lol  He has played 100 tests. Last 25 tests average 29. That is 1/4 th of his career.

Ishant greatest ability was his availability. Bumrah might be 1000 times better but if he is injured all the time , how can he play test cricket. To his credit Ishant he was always that willing work horse who was ready to do the dirty work for the captain.

Ishant should be looked beyond stats.Prime example is Banguluru test in 2017, where he bowled almost 27 overs to keep India in the match when test and series was on the line.He picked just one wicket but he and Umesh were the reason why India stayed in the match and ultimately win it. Ishant was always ready to bowl 20 -25 overs for his captains in overseas tests.

His "availability" was due to the fact that he only operated at 60-70% of his capacity for a major part of his career. When you are not bowling all out in a bid to stay injury-free, you are not giving your best to the team's cause. He was a much faster bowler when he debuted and he slowed down to avoid risk of injury as he realized he could still keep his place in the team even with mediocre performances. The only time he gave it his all was in that one Lords Test in the second innings when he bounced out England. Other than that, he was content to do just enough to be in the captain's good books.

To add to the above, Ishant started giving his 100% in Tests after he realized that he had no future in white ball cricket and that younger bowlers like Bumrah, Shami were outperforming him even with the red ball. That was the time he stepped up and for a couple of years, he was indeed a good bowler. But he certainly did not deserve to play so many Tests.

That is ridiculous statement and insult to Ishant.

Among 100 test Indian cricketers, the ranking is :

Sunil Gavaskar

Sachin Tendulkar

Rahul Dravid

Kapil Dev

Anil Kumble

Virat Kohli

Virender Sehwag

VVS Laxman

That's top 8. Then behind these are :

Cheteshwar Pujara

Dilip Vengsarkar

Saurav Ganguly( gets points for captaincy as India won Babaji Ka Ghanta in 90s overseas)

Harbhajan Singh

Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma's career can almost be split into 2 halfs. His second half was very good and his last few years were actually brilliant. In his last 52 Tests he had 162 wickets at 26 and SR of 54 with 8 fifers. His first 53 Tests were so bad that it was difficult for the average to be brought down by too many. In his first 53 Tests he averaged 39 at a SR of 70. That's when he should not have played. He improved a lot and kind of became world class in the last 3-4 years where he averaged 21-23.

It is harsh to include Saurav in the worst players. Ganguly had his limitations but he played some crucial roles in our overseas wins. He was the one who started our wins outside Asia after our dismal showing in the 90's. His batting was very good at the start of his career with runs in England, SA and also in Australia but he kind of went down after that. He did play some important innings like the one at the Gabba in 2003 or the one at Leeds in 2002. He did come back after the Greg Chappell incident and did have a good end to his career with a second wind. His fifty against SA on a difficult pitch tp get India to 240+ in the 2006 series helped India to their first win in that country.

I haven't seen Vengsarkar play at all, I think he did travel to Australia in 1991/92 but did not score many runs. So can't comment on him.

Bajji was a strange case. He did burst on the scene after that brilliant home series against Australia but did not achieve much despite his 400+ wickets. May be he should not have played 100 Tests as in the final few years of his career he was horrendous.

Pujara once again seems like someone who is getting dragged to 100 Tests by the Indian management. He should not have played after 2021 where he struggled after the Australian series. He along with Rahane and Virat have been poor over the last 4 years but Rahane was the only one who got axed. Between the 3 they only have 2 Test hundreds in the last 3 years and none of them have come with the bat of Virat. I think Pujara should retire after this series as I think they have done enough and by hanging on with mediocre performances and in delusion of being a great they are doing more harm than good to the team.

I feel even Virat should hang his boots unless he scores a ton in this series. I hope India prepare at least one flat track so that Virat can get some runs. If he does not, I don't see any reason for him to continue. Average of 26 in over 4 years is poor and no player deserves that long rope. Sachin was crucified for just 2 years of bad form and that too when he was 37 years old and in his last leg and still ended up with a 53+ average. So Virat has been given enough chances and I hope he does not further embarrass himself by continuing to play. I hope this is his last Tests series unless he scores some runs in the final 2 Tests. If his average ends up at 45 it will be sad as he was supposed to be a great of the game with 50+ average and 10K Test runs.

If KL Rahul gets 100 tests, he should play exceptionally well to average above 45 for next 60 tests. For an opener, I doubt it

yes fans overlook this factor but captains want such a player. Some stability is required.

he should be made to play, even if he does not want to, until he is around 38 years of age. by then, his avg would have dipped below 45 and started to head in the low 40s.

Nope Ishant's numbers are highly flattering because he was played a lot on helpful surfaces virtually all the time, similar to BK in fact. This is what he actually does on flat/dead wickets -

And these were his renaissance years!
