ACC announces dates, venues of 2023 Asia Cup

Recommended Posts

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Thursday announced that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held from 31st August to 17th September 2023 and will see the elite teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal, compete in a total of 13 exciting ODI matches. Of particular significance is Nepal's participation, as it marks their first-ever appearance in an Asian event.

The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches being held in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka.

Under the hybrid model, Pakistan versus Nepal, Bangladesh versus Afghanistan, Afghanistan versus Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka versus Bangladesh are likely to be held at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore.

The 2023 edition will feature two groups, with two teams from each group qualifying for the Super Four stage. The top two teams from the Super Four stage will then face off in the final.

This tournament holds great importance for the Asian teams as it will serve as valuable preparation for the ICC World Cup, which will take place in India.

Previously, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had declined to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, citing security concerns. In order to ensure the hosting rights of the event were preserved, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) proposed two options in a hybrid model. The first option involved India playing their matches at a neutral venue, while all other matches would be held in Pakistan. The second option suggested that four group stage matches in the first phase be played in Pakistan, with the subsequent phase, including matches featuring the Indian team and the final, taking place at a neutral venue.

Ultimately, the second option of the hybrid model has been accepted. The organizers will soon announce the complete schedule of the tournament, providing further details on the matches and venues.

Not sure how effective Sir Don will be in Srilankan conditions...especially his seam bowling.

@zen - what you think?

Sir Don is a core group player and also marked to be the future ODI captain. Teams revolve around core group players so they are played if fit and available irrespective of the conditions.

If a team changes core group players too often then it can get into a situation where it is playing musical chairs and the catch up game.

Pakistan XI looks predictable for the first time in a looong while.  They have a settled unit.

I am not sure which direction will India go...  Either full of oldies or some exciting young players thrown in.

Gill

Rohit

Kohli

That trio looks confirmed only.  Maybe Pandu as well.

BCCI has had to compromise here. How the hell does Pak get to host even 4 games after the events of May 9?

This bozo Jay Shah doesn't even have a drop of his dad's political acumen.

Yeah Sethi later said they wanted to host 4 matches only....  The only W is BCCI got Sri lanka as the other venue.

Other than that PCB pretty much achieved its objective.

Only blunder from them in this case is Pakistan will get to play Nepal in Lahore...  Rest of their games are in SL too.  While G2 will have 3 games in Pakistan.

Not sure how PCB achieved their objective. PCBs demands were:

1) If India don't travel to Pakistan, they will also not come to India for World Cup

2) If Asia Cup becomes a hybrid model where India matches will be played in neutral venue, PCB will also want Pakistan matches for world cup to be played at neutral venue.

Now ACC has given 4 token games in Lahore. This is not exactly the hybrid model which they initially asked where only India matches will be played in separate venue. Its a lollypop gesture where only 4 matches consisting of Pakistan vs Nepal, Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, Afghanistan vs Srilanka, Srilanka vs Bangladesh will be played in Lahore.

Remaining all games will be in Srilanka including India matches, Pakistan games, Super 4s and Finals.

PCB not only accepted this offer but also now willing to send its team to India for world cup.

Jay Shah came out victorious from this as after months of Sethi running his mouth he has accepted defeat and agreed to the terms laid by BCCI only for a small token of 4 games.

Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer likely to be available for 2023 Asia Cup – Reports

Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer are reportedly likely to be available for the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup. Wow. I didn't realize there was going to be only one Pakistan match among the 4, while SL, BD and AFG are playing two matches each :phehe:

So far Shadab has had the better of our maharathis, even SKY. Eager to see if Shreyas can take him down, for a home WC Shreyas' form/confidence is vital. That #4 position has been a headache ever since Yuvi's retirement.

Shreyas will indeed make the middle order more strong...  Hopefully he has not declined.  Unfortunately this guy never had a consistent run in Int'l cricket due to injuries or TM failure.

Jaiswal can make it to the squad as well if he has a good tour in WI ( he is rumoured to be picked in all three formats)

Bowling is a major worry barring Siraj & hopefully Kuldeep joins him as well.  He has been superb against Pakistan.  We have never lost when he played against them.
