They have selected the best realistic squad of 17. Nice to see that. 

 

Spin does not have a big part in ODI's anywhere and hasn't for years. So its nice to see that they have acknowledge that and they are getting the combination correct finally after nearly a decade.

 

I hope Rohit and Dravid are willing to fail and give enough chances to these guys against both Pakistan and Australia - these are the only quality sides we are playing before CWC.  Varma especially has to bowl regularly and get that bowling level to a reasonable standard. 

 

If Varma does well with bat and offers a decent off spin option, we can drop SKY and  drop one of Axar/Jadeja for the final squad of 15.

 

This squad will allow us to rotatae seaming options and keep them fresh for important matches as well. 

 

If Ajit Agarkar was responsible for this, then he's the best selector we have had since around 2013/14.  

 

After the World Cup, we can keep the same template and develop better personnel for the future.

Yes but he's still a right arm wrist spinner which is completely different for RHB batters to face due to the trajectory and the grip.

Well have to say a good squad. This is the best possible squad of 17( 18) the selectors can pick for Asia Cup.

Outside of these 18, few players still have chances for the worldcup depending on injuries and team strategies.

- Jaiswal or Ruturaj can be a backup opener but chances are very slim since current 18 member squad is overflowing with batsman.
- Ashwin or Washington as offspin allrounder. But looks like they are well behind Jadeja and Axar.
- Chahal can still be back on eggsperince legspin quota. Looks like he has been done away but you never know.

If I have to trim down this 18 man squad to 15 for the world cup, I will drop

1. Samson ( since he is already a backup in Asia Cup squad)
2. Prasidh ( We can't even play Bumrah, Shami and Siraj in the XI then how can we fit Prasidh in there)
3. Last spot is tricky. Looking at squad, Axar if offering nothing which Jadeja can't do. But then there are too many batsman in 15 squad. So I will drop one of Kishan, Sky or Tilak.

Bishnoi not getting into odi team is probably the right call at this point. Both him and Arshdeep are more suited to t20 cricket. Overall not a bad squad I have to say.
