Well have to say a good squad. This is the best possible squad of 17( 18) the selectors can pick for Asia Cup.

Outside of these 18, few players still have chances for the worldcup depending on injuries and team strategies.

- Jaiswal or Ruturaj can be a backup opener but chances are very slim since current 18 member squad is overflowing with batsman.
- Ashwin or Washington as offspin allrounder. But looks like they are well behind Jadeja and Axar.
- Chahal can still be back on eggsperince legspin quota. Looks like he has been done away but you never know.

Jaiswal/Ruturaj can only come in if Kohli is out. Kohli is the weakest link in that top order. So, that is not going to happen even if Kohli fails. Maybe after the World Cup. Most teams will be right-hander batsmen heavy and so SLA allrounders will be more useful than Ash/Washington .   Off spin is the weakest form of all bowling in LOI's not just spin bowling.   Unless they are exceptional batting form it wouldn't be worth taking an offspin allrounder

This selection should also be seen from WC selection POV . I think real dilemma of selection is around MO bats . Both iyer & KL together may not play in Asia Cup but will be preparing for WC with the team. Hence it is a good step.

1.They won't pick too many raw players for WC. May be just 1

2.Need 2 WK within that pool of 4-5 MO batsmen Plus at least 1 to play as an opener within that 4-5.

Most probably it could be KL & Ishan  ( WK & opening if needed)

Iyer ,SKY (if he can come to grips with ODI) & a wild card in Tilak Varma (due to leftie)

So 2 Lefties ,2 WK , 2 backup openers - looks selection logic is good.

How they perform is another matter - Do not fancy both KL & Ishan as openers.

SKY -a disappointment so far in ODI though he should have done better . Tilak -Too inexperienced .

So have to go with what we have .

India will do well ONLY if MO players play above expectations with expected decent show from top .

If Iyer is 100% fit, then he definitely makes it ahead of SKY.

Shami might play ahead of Thakur though

Ajit Agarkar has done a wonderful job selecting the Asia Cup squad and squad to Ireland.

Apart from Umran in place of Mukesh in Ireland, can't fault any of his choices in either squad.

Yep. Squad for Asia Cup is as logical as possible with the players we have available. If Agarkar really is the force behind these selections(and not just a mouthpiece), he's the best chief selectors we have had in a decade.

Probable playing 11

Rohit

Gill

Virat

Iyer

Rahul

Pandya

Jadeja

Kuldeep

Bumrah

Siraj

Shami

Shami and Axar may be selected ss per the pitch

3 express pacers are not needed in the playing11 in SL.   Especially when none of them can bat.   If they play together, our batting will stop at no.6.  Coz we hv Kuldeep too which is a dud with the bat.

We were not getting logical squads before.

Then comes Agarkar and we have 2 logical squads for the Asia Cup and Ireland.

So he must be having some say.

The earlier committee would have chosen Mukesh and Chahal in place of Prasidh and Tilak.

Can Shami be used as a slogger at 8 ?

I would like to experiment with that in the Asia Cup.

Bumrah's hitting ability has improved too.

Same team...  All bases covered.  Can't play Shami over Siraj as Vikrant Gupta is hell bent on his Chahal rant & playing Shami in first XI.

Shami at no.8 might work against weaker teams. Not sure if it would work against poyz coz their bowling attack is very strong.   Bumrah is coming back after a long injury break.  Overburdening him with batting may prove to be counter productive (IMO).

Actually, Rohit said that he was getting the team and that he was just keeping Agarkar in the loop. It could be that Rohit and TM are choosing to listen to better advice from some backroom analyst.

Bumrah will anyway bat at 9 or 10.  Don't think he will be burdened with batting there.

IMO Shami, the bowler, adds more value than Shardul the batsman does.

Analysts are the ones who push mediocre players based on performances in low profile games.

It needs people with cricketing acumen to look past dry stats.

Batting stops at 6. Jadeja cant force the pace in later stages and cannot hit.Period. Last 4 cant score 20 combined. Brittle batting lineup.

Don't agree with this.  Anyway, I'm glad to give Agarkar or whoever credit for picking this squad.

What was most impressive was the fact that Rohit said he didn't want to drop fast bowlers.   This is absolutely an important development which I'm most impressed about.

The extra fielder inside the middle overs and the 2 new balls + dew has made it difficult for spinners to perform even in India especially against top sides.

Since the modern ODI rules came into play in 2015, our best spinner in the middle overs against top sides(SA, England, Australia, NZ) in India is Kuldeep Yadav

He has taken 30 wickets at an average of 35 and at an economy of 5.88 Only Adam Zampa has a better record in middle overs in India with 19 wickets at an average of 30.8 and an economy rate of 5.44

Our next best is Jadeja who has an average of 41  and economy of 4.84 .  Axar similar economy, higher average.

There is no point in selecting specialist spinners.  Spin does NOT work even in the middle overs against top sides.

You need more seam options in the squad and in the XI as quicks can take wickets through the middle as well. Spinners add no value unless they are exce[ptional or they can hit. So, its important that quicks are rotated and especially against top sides/knockouts, you need to go pace heavy with fresh fast bowlers. This is a great squad for that.

Spinners do have significantly lower averages at the death though but higher economy rates because batsmen attack, and they have 5 fielders to protect.

Knowing all this, this debunks the idea that part time spin options are much worse. they offer proper batting and they wont even be more than 10 % worse than specialist spinners.

This is the last missing piece. Need to get Varma to bowl a whole lot of off spin and maybe even a few at the death as a 6th bowling option , allowing us to play the extra batter.

Bishnoi probably missed by a hair.  I kinda expected given that he has no real experience in this format. Pretty good defensive bowler. India carries too many finger spinners. 2 of them. Including Kuldeep all 3 are left arm spinners. Given that India is reluctant to use Axar against left handers i say what is the point?

If I have to trim down this 18 man squad to 15 for the world cup, I will drop

1. Samson ( since he is already a backup in Asia Cup squad)
2. Prasidh ( We can't even play Bumrah, Shami and Siraj in the XI then how can we fit Prasidh in there)
3. Last spot is tricky. Looking at squad, Axar if offering nothing which Jadeja can't do. But then there are too many batsman in 15 squad. So I will drop one of Kishan, Sky or Tilak

Tilak was termed as backup for Iyer...if Iyer is fit then Tilak will go out.
