Why is Asia cup suddenly getting so much hype?

Recommended Posts

So this was always an after thought tournament and considered insignificant in grand scheme of things.

In Asia Cup 2014, India didn't send its regular Captain and rested one of its best white ball player Raina back then. The team was led by young captain Kohli

Same in 2018 Asia cup when the entire focus was on the England tour. Indian team reluctantly traveled to UAE at the last minute resting its captain and best player Kohli.

There were always talks about resting key players and testing bench strength in Asia Cup during yesteryears.

But this seems to have change now from last Asia Cup. I see media hyping up this tournament as biggest event after world cup, players calling it as huge tournament and desperate to get fit prior to that, loads of discussion about team selection etc. etc.

So what has changed and why suddenly Asia cup been hyped up so much?

  1. Is it just a marketing tactics by host broadcaster to earn more revenue?
  2. Is it bcoz we don't play Pakistan regularly and this tournament come across as a guarantee 2 match series?
  3. Or is it bcoz our previous teams were so strong that even without main players we were confident of winning. But now we know we need to pick absolutely best possible XI to win the cup?

I just want to know the reasoning why once considered insignificant tournament is suddenly getting so much hype.

Mainly becz of 2 reasons.   1) Asia Cup is being held in Pak and SL.  WC (being held in india) will also hv similar pitches.  So, team performance in this series is likely to reflect in WC as well.  2) WC is only 45 days away and it is also in the same format (50 over). So, this is the last chance to finalize the squad after having observed/analysed the performance of all players.

Asia Cup 2014 was just before WT20 though and both were played in Bangladesh

Asia Cup 2014 was held in 50 over format and it was followed by WT20.  There was a format difference. Hence, different set of players.  (With few exceptions).
