Jewel of Indian sport.

Cricket may have the money and fan following, but hockey has given us 8 Olympic gold medals. No other team in any sport has seen that sort of success, not even from USA, Russia, Germany, Australia.

We will reach double digits in coming years, my hunch.

coupled with india's economic rise, i see us becoming perennial gold medal contenders. hockey league also coming back next year.

Great domination.

Just don't understand how we fluffed the world cup so badly. Otherwise we are a top top hockey side.

Harmanpreet forgot how to play. We were damn poor in PCs.

Beat Aussies twice in this year's pro-league, no draw/loss

Beat Dutch once, drew once, lost twice

Beat Germans 2/2 times

Beat Belgians once, lost once

Beat Arg 2/2 times

Hope we upgrade the medal in Paris.

Just want that Olympics gold. As much as I am a cricket fan, if it means sacrificing WC2023 for a hockey gold in Paris 2024, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Orissa and Patnaik should be credited for the rise of Hockey in India. Astro-turfs, training and sponsoring the team. They hosted the Youth and Men's World Cup as well. Kudos to him :two_thumbs_up:

Investment and intentional effort to train the players in the correct way is all it took.

Everything else we heard over the decades - genetics, mental weakness etc etc - was total bogus.  So gratifying to see this!!

Look at this picture. They all look perfect like real athletes. Unlike some of the cricket players who are overweight.

10-2 was not enough. Pakistanis have no height/physique advantage over Indians. None whatsoever.

Now that BJP is the ruling state party in Odisha, will they continue to sponsor the Indian hockey team? If not would corporate sponsors step up? We dont want Indian hockey to go backwards simply due to lack of money and support.

@Gollum

The IHC has not gone anywhere since Tokyo. They still are extremely fragile and can lose upto the last minute against any team. They are patsies against Australia. Not sure what all this investment has done. The women have regressed remarkably.

@Gollum

They'll probably relocate it to Gujarat. Or stop funding, dunno. Patnaik was a genuine hockey enthusiast who played the sport in his youth at a decent level, hence the passion and personal involvement. He backed Indian hockey when others had lost faith. If our team medals in Paris, Modi/BJP may like to glory hunt, but doubt they'll support the sport in case of poor results.

Done ok after the WC disaster. Only go missing against Aussies. Won ACT and Asian Games convincingly and ruthlessly which earlier Indian teams struggled to do. We will finish 4th in the Pro League, still a medal contender in Paris like 3 years back.

Doubtful contender to even get out of the group stage IMO. We have a guaranteed loss against the Aussies and lots of banana peels in the way.
