India news outlets: Ashwin in, Siraj out ?

Recommended Posts

Aaj Tak, Zee News...and most India news outlets speculating the pre-match net session indication that Ashwin will be in the XI replacing Siraj.

If this happens - it would be a bit like the 2011 WC - Sreesanth played India's first and last match ( final ) - and the same would be the case with Ashwin if he plays tomorrow.

Also in 2011 - Harbhajan was the preferred  specialist spinner ( because he could bat )  ....India went in only with 1 specialist spinner in their preferred playing XI

But even in 2011 - Ashwin played the quaterfinals against Aus in Ahmedabad.

I think if the TM does it - it would be the right move. Ashwin is reliable, the pitch will assist spinners. Siraj is a lottery and capable of losing the match with his fielding and loose opening spell replete with boundary balls. And Ashwin can BAT. We have a number 8 that can score 20 crucial runs if it comes to that.

In all honesty, this maybe a false story as captains dont mess with the winning team. 2011 WC was different because Nehra was injured and Sreesanth was a replacement. If Nehra was not injured, he would have played. I mean Nehra bowled a poor over against SA in the league match which cost us that match but Dhoni still continued with him. I'm guessing Rohit is not far different. He like Dhoni believes in team spirit and being there as a leader for team members. I think unchanged XI

The only potential issue is if we bat first and there is heavy dew then captain will feel like one hand tied with just 2 seamers.

Otherwise Ashwin is the best bet against Head, Warner. Adds depth to the batting with him at 8 and Kuldeep at 9 we will have decent depth.

Ashwin for SKY would be some 3D chess.

In the 1996WC final, SL played only 2 frontline pacers and 3 spinners against Aus.  Those 2 pacers also didn't complete their quota.  Yet they restricted Aus to only 241. And won it easily.    How times hv changed?  These days we can't think of going with just 2 frontline pacers on any type of surface.
