BBL used it first.

Yes, it's right.

Someone like V Iyer won't bowl ever, just bat as per impact player rule. It's a terrible rule done just to increase more views and quality of tournament but ultimately not helping the individuals on a personal front.

How much did V Iyer bowl in previous IPL anyway?

Good ARs will still do both. Hardik,Axar,Jaddu,Thakur etc did both last IPL too.

The rule is fine. Only thing I'll change is announce it before the toss.

Bowling allrounders will anyway get the chance to bowl...issue is with impact player rule the teams might onboard an extra batter to lengthen the batting order...which means even lesser chance for a bowling allrounder to bat.

If the batting allrounders like Venkatesh Iyer, Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube etc won't bowl..how they will improve ?

Likes of Stoinis, Marsh, Head are proper batters but still they often bowl. Markram & Philips have started to bowl better than our above mentioned allrounders.

No. Remove IPL

IPL itself provides you the option to choose your best in form players

Two months of form is enough consistency to get the nod

If agenda driven TM and BCCI admins including selectors don't pick them and let then gel together by playing more for India for ample period then people shouldn't be naive to blame IPL

He should keep bowling and keep improving, that's the point. The impact player rule gives the captain and coach an extra luxury to use him as specialist batsman outside of 11 main players.

If we want a replacement/backup of Hardik, V Iyer is the nearest possible solution to that role.

But he wasn't bowling anyway. What makes you think this rule is stopping him to bowl?

He can still be asked to bowl  and impact can be used for different players

Was he himself not bowling or it was a move by captain?

There is no reason why he shouldn't bowl. He is making a case for himself because if he can bowl and be a 6th option( which he is good enough to be) then he has a strong case to be Hardik's backup and make it to the World Cup squad/reserves.

V Iyer, Vijay Shankar & Shivam Dube...all 3 are primarily batters who can bowl a bit (like Tilak Varma, Deepak Hooda, Abhishek Sharma etc)...they can't be relied to give 7-8 overs with ball consistently.

Hardik can be trusted to bowl 7-8 overs if he is fit, his bowling skillset is far superior to above 3. Only Bawa has the similar skillset with the bowl.

I was talking about T20s, not ODIs.

In T20s, V Iyer >> V Shankar/S Dube

Verma, Hooda and Sharma are part time spinners. V Iyer is a part time seamer but good enough to bowl 2 overs and be used as 6th bowler in place of Hardik(if he is injured).

The only challenge is V Iyer has had all success as an opener. The opening slots are full with some combination of Jaiswal, Gill, Kishan and Ruturaj.

Will Iyer be able to deliver the same impact in the middle order is yet to be seen

In middle order he needs to be given more time. Can't expect results too early.

We need to have multiple options for  6th bowler role( basically a batsman who can bowl better than part timers).

Venky's SMAT was not very good...he need to do well with his primary skill as his secondary skill is just decent. Has golden chance this season coz GG as coach is known to back good players.

Abhishek is doing quite well as an opener, one breakthrough IPL season and he will lead the race. But both need to bowl in IPL as well as I doubt selectors see domestic tournaments with much care.

For T20s, IPL is more important than SMAT. I am talking about Hardik's backup here. Abhishek is not a choice because he is a part time spinner himself. Need a seam bowling all rounder and Venky Iyer probably looks the most solid option after Hardik.

If you go with Abhishek as 6th bowler then we need to pick a genuine pace/seam bowl A/R at 7 which we don't have.

Obviously no one rates his bowling. Dunno how much he's bowling in the nets. He needs to convince the TM first.

If we consider like for like backup for Hardik...Raj Bawa is the one, not seen much of Arshin's bowling so won't comment.

If not, then we have to do some adjustment like spinner as genuine allrounder (Sindhu, Washington) plus one batting allrounder like Tewatia, Abhishek, Tilak and then select atleast 2 fast bowlers who can bat like Harshit, Yudhvir, Hangargekar, Chahar.
