As for Pant, let's see if he can return to his previous level. I will be surprised if Jurel does not average 43+ in tests ( unless a new batting weakness is unearthed in 6 months or so ) Would have come up with a higher number if he wasn't a keeper. Mosher 1
tapandrun Posted February 25, 2024 Posted February 25, 2024 (edited) Looked compact batter and v.good keeper-Diving around for faster bowler and good with spinners. Ind can try-out faster bowlers(in case they are unable to bowl to the line ) with him behind the wkt. Edited February 25, 2024 by tapandrun express bowling 1

Pant has that avg. Though Jurel looks good, Pant was destroying the FC scene and looked even more impressive. Very hard for keeper-batters to avg >42/43 - the ones that come to mind are only a handful of "modern greats": Flower, Sanga (when he kept), Gilly, Pant; Prior and Rizwan have avgs barely over 40. Seems very premature to assume that Jurel can join this pantheon when he has not yet been tested in SENA.
tweaker Posted February 26, 2024 Author Posted February 26, 2024 The 46 Jurel made last week in Rajkot was a teaser. It gave you a glimpse of his compact, no-movements-wasted style, his minimalistic way of defending fast bowlers, letting the ball come to him and dropping his bat precisely into line, and that confident, elbows-out strut down the pitch to flick away a bit of loose turf. velu, Frustrated and sensible-indian 3

Seems very premature to assume that Jurel can join this pantheon when he has not yet been tested in SENA. Choosing wicket keepers based on significant batting ability is a rather recent happening. Started about 20 years back after seeing Gilchrist doing so well for 5 years or so. Even then, most keeper batsmen, chosen thereafter, have been either aggressive batters with questionable defensive techniques or 2nd rung batters. Pant, for example, is a very aggressive batter whose forte was delivering in crunch situations in test matches when his team was struggling. Consistency was not his forte as defense was not on his mind most of the times. High batting averages in FC is a different thing as that sometimes happens when the quality of a batter is way superior to the pedestrian bowlers that are usually on offer. The reason why I feel that Jurel is likely to average 43+ is because his defensive technique and footwork seem really good, and that is rarely the case with usual keeper batsmen. And this, combined with good temperament, can lead to consistency and high averages, especially when a batter can attack when needed too, like Jurel. The " never played in SENA " part is important, which is why I said, " unless a new weakness is found in the next 6 months ". singhvivek141 Posted February 26, 2024 Posted February 26, 2024 I would say that it gives me immense happiness to see that young players like Jurel aren't taking Tests casually and giving their best to the team..despite of all the loudness around IPL & T20I's Test Cricket is always the first format for me personally, and any good performance is Tests are often remembered & talked for longer time. tweaker, Sandz, express bowling and 5 others 5 3

And attacking approach is a must for atleast 4 of the top 7 batters these days. But consistency is a different thing and consistent batsmen average close to 50 or higher ... and there are very few of those available. Batters who average 50+ may or may not be consistent because they may achieve that either by scoring consistently or by lots of 170+ scores while failing often enough. But batters who are really consistent and are crossing 40 regularly ( and there are very few of them ) will find it difficult to have a middling average below 45. Even if we ignore first in in 3rd Test, Both 177/7 an 125/5 were points in match where game could have easily gone to England. Find of tournament. The " never played in SENA " part is important, which is why I said, " unless a new weakness is found in the next 6 months ". Gilchrist was phenomenon that change wkt-keeper in the cricket , previously wkt-keepers were able to bat -Moin, Mongia, Andy flower, Steward all could bat some were good. But Gilchrist changed it as how they have to be as a batter, he was a match winner in white-ball and a thrasher in Red-ball, if Aus were 350 (in tests)by the time he was in he could take Aus to 450+ in no time, with tiring bowler and his clean six-hitting capabilities made him a threat. He was a top glovesman too if there was no revolution as such, you coud pick him in the team just for his keepjng. The notion keeping is secondary all came from Ind and Ind commentators where Ind was failing to find a decent keeper and then if your domestic top pick batters would not be that good how can a wkt-keeper be a batter of intnl. quality. No other team was having this notion that wkt-keeping is secondary skill - NZ had McCullum, SA- de-Cock, Aus -Haddin, Sl- Sanga. ---- These all are top wkt-keepers (do not think they were flawed keepers) and were good batters too. Pak dropped Akmal and never picked him bcoz he was not that good with wkt-keeping, he was top batter in their domestics. Ind tried many so-called keeper batter who were neither good keeper nor a good batter and then they had to ask Dravid to keep and that produced results for Ind - Reached WC finals after such a long time Dhoni was an average keeper when he started, but he became a never seen before kind of keeper to spinner but remained avg./below avg. keeper to pace. So the notion that wkt-keeping is secondary skill came mostly from Ind and ind commentators. Edited February 26, 2024 by tapandrun singhvivek141 1
