1991 Ranji Trophy final

Recommended Posts

Only time when Haryana won Ranji trophy title was in 1991.

Kapil Dev was captain of Haryana team with players like Ajay Jadeja and Chetan Sharma.

Mumbai had many heavyweights like Sachin, Vengsarkar, Manjrekar, Kambli. Mumbai conceded a big lead in first inning and finally got a target of 355 runs on final day.

They scored 352 runs in 65 overs and lost by just 2 runs. Vengsarkar remained unbeated on 139 and Sachin scored 96. Abey Kuruvilla was last man to be dismissed and he was run out.

Must have been one hell of match.

It ended, on May 7, in front of a packed stadium with over 20,000 spectators, with just 14 deliveries remaining when the result was decided on the last day, with the margin of victory for Haryana being just two runs, and an inconsolable Dilip Vengsarkar on his knees.

What happened from there on is what makes this match iconic. There were a little over two sessions left to play on the final day when Bombay came out to bat in their second innings. Having lost the match on first-innings basis, they had no option but to try and get the 355 runs in 68 overs. It wasn’t an impossible task but putting on a chase at 5.22 runs per over in a first-class match was hardly the norm those days. And to make matters worse for the hosts, they lost their top three batters with just 34 runs on the board by lunch on day five.

The foundation for Bombay’s chase was laid by Tendulkar. It was a stunning assault by the youngster. Despite being so young, he took the battle to the opposition and went after the likes of Kapil Dev and Chetan Sharma. He smashed 96 off 75 balls, with five sixes, and was the dominant force in his 134-run partnership with Vengsarkar.

What is interesting is that, this match had 5 pacers who were atleast fast medium pacers in their quickest years, with Ankola being genuinely quick.

The pacers were Ankola, Kapil, Kulkarni, Chetan and Kuruvilla.

The shift from gentle medium pacers to fast-medium and fast pacers started in the late 1980s in India.

The current day Ranji teams should look at these pace attacks. Mumbai had such an exciting pace attack in 1991.

This match maybe before 1992 Australia.test series and the 1992 world cup.

Most Of the team.India were playing this match.

Back then it was a standard. There was no IPL no pointless bilateral ODI series. So Ranji was an essential game. Even in 2000s i have seen Rahul Dravid actively participating in Ranji Trophy. Tendulkar's last Ranji was in 2011.  With so many short format matches current players don't play enough first class games. It is also a reason why their game against spin has regressed. Gill only made debut recently. Look at his now. He completely stopped playing first class.

Australian and English players play first class regularly so they'll always have that extra practice advantage over current indian teams. Last year smith was equally out of form as kohli, but he played in English county, found some form and smashed centuries in wtc final and ashes

Tendulkar had thrown away his inning many times in international cricket on nothing deliveries after a good knock and same thing had happened in this match also where he hit a full toss straight to cover fielder.

@MediumPacer

And then there was the 1981/82 final that I remember quite well.

Karnataka made 705. Delhi made 707/8 and won on first innings lead. I went back and looked at the scoreboard:

For Delhi, Maninder Singh bowled 88 overs.  Rakesh Shukla bowled 63.

For Karnataka, Vijaykrishna bowled 71 overs.

Raghuram Bhat bowled 94 ... NINETY FOUR ... overs.

Total snoozefest until the end when it got exciting ... but I was hooked to the radio the whole time ... listening to Kannada commentary. 100s of times "YeDagai spinner Raghuram Bhat ... pavilion tudiyinda ... Umpire mathu stumpsina madhye ... Uttamavaada Chendu!!!

Bhat was deadly on turners. should have played more in home conditions.

Mostly true but a few of the intl umps really hated him for some reason - Daryl Harper, *nor of course!

He was just 18 at that time! In pursuit of quick runs, mistakes will be made.

Fed also had a mostly unopposed period before Nadal and especially Djoker grew as tennis players. For first several years since his 1st grand slam, Fed was virtually unopposed in 3 out of 4 Grand Slams.
