“Wrong move by Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee”: Irfan and Varun highlight biggest mistake in T20 World Cup squad

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has announced the Indian team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Rinku Singh’s exclusion has been questioned by former players, considering his performances for the Men in Blue. The southpaw has contributed in India’s victories in the limited chances but the selectors preferred Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube over the 26-year-old.

The wise men of the Indian cricket also selected four spinners, a move that has surprised many. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are the specialist spinners while Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are all-rounders.

Varun Aaron was not expecting this move. “I haven’t seen a team with four spinners. You can say that two are all-rounders but still they are spinning all-rounders. The selectors should have gone with three tweakers to include Rinku in the 15-member team,” Varun Aaron said on Star Sports.

Irfan Pathan agreed with Varun. “After losing the semi-final in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, the selectors said that they would prefer young players. However, they have taken a U-turn. Yuzvendra Chahal, who didn’t play a game in the last edition of the T20 World Cup, has been given another chance. Where is Ruturaj Gaikwad? The biggest surprise for me is Rinku Singh.

“He should have been a part of the team. Instead of four spinners, the selectors should have selected three, allowing Rinku to travel with the Men in Blue,” Irfan Pathan said.

Agarkar has been a huge disappointment. Says all the right things but did the same stuff which his predecessors used to do. It's like this year's IPL never happened! Else how do you explain selection of Jadeja, Siraj, Axar, Avesh, Arshdeep etc. in the squad or as replacements. There's no X-factor, there's nothing to put fear in opponent. Such a shyte squad selected and I don't see get them into semis.

He's in the studio. Not a bad one tbh.

He actually is quite knowledgeable about bowling terminology including reverse swing and the physics behind it etc

Power dynamics at play. I think it is influenced by BCCI. Clearly remember the president himself said Kohli will be in the team.

Why even bother with the selectors if captain and team is already decided by the BCCI president. And in that case selectors/Agarkar shouldn't say anything or make any noise if they're totally powerless.

If they voice opinions their own retirement salary will be in jeopardy. You can’t go against corporate company you are working for publicly. If they don’t like it they should quit. I think they have some free hand in test matches but ODIs and T20 still BCCi and captain decides. Rohit was against the selections for test matches against England as well he himself mentioned that Agarkar convinced him.

Thats because the real power isn't with the selectors. Jay shah goes & announces months before Rohit is the captain, the selector probably gets to give his inputs. I think the team is probably Rohit + Dravid's selection.

Varun Aaron is an expert now?

The more I listen to Varun Aaron's analysis, the more I like him. Could be a refreshing change in the commentary box from the usual stale voices. And he seems comfortable with both Hindi as well as English.

Agree . I thought his command over English was pretty good and he covered lots of nuances of bowling , similar to how Ashwin talks and has lot of balanced takes with great points  unlike harsha bhogle who just yells some gibberish.

Chahal is biggest brainfade. Didn't play in WT20 2022, didn't play T20Is since and suddenly picked in WT20 side.

Too many holes and non-performers. Take out Bumrah, SKY, Jaiswa, Dube, and this team would struggle to get past minnows.
