Biggest selection blunders in important tournaments

Recommended Posts

I am starting this three to keep a record of how seniority / stupidity leads to huge selection blunders.

For this t20 wc -

jaiswal not opening with chokli made into an opener based of low strike rate IPL performance over jaiswal with v v good six hitting ability is by any stats standard the dumbest decision i have seen in last 20 years .
Other selection is Rinku ignored over Dubey .

Wtc finals at lords -

playing with two spinners was not smart imo

wc 2019

the entire middle order was a joke.

Biggest blunder by the selectors is that they look at only the recently concluded IPL as a yardstick to select or drop young players for WT20.  It is a no brainer that they should look at IPL as well as recently conculded intl t20 games (just preceding IPL) in total.      Jaiswal & Rinku are incredible intl t20 performers and will walk into the playing11 of most top teams.  Just because they didn't hv an exceptional IPL, they should not be sidelined.  Com'on Vada Pav & Ajit Agarkar, you can't be so dumb.

The team was finalised before the IPL and any exceptional perfomance would not have made any difference. .

Inspite of having Kuldeep and Chahal ,both Axar and Jadeja are playing every match.

It was already decided that Virat and Rohit are going to open and so the late middle order was selected consisting of Dube,Axar,Jadeja,Pandya.

The squad was announced on April 30, 2024.  At that time, IPL was 70% over.   https://www.bcci.tv/articles/2024/news/55556111/india-s-squad-for-icc-men-s-t20-world-cup-2024-announced

I thought nothing would top the selection disaster of Rahane in the 2016 WT20 but this tournament has just taken it to a different level.

1. Kohli as opener and Jaiswal on bench.

2. Dube pretty much playing as a specialist batter in the middle order.

3. Jadeja in the squad let alone the playing XI.

4. Chahal in the squad when we already have three spin options and Rinku in the effing reserves.

Absolutely diabolical..

He is correct, though, news about Kohli opening was being floated for months before this, the IPL top performers like Abhishek were not even considered. Pant was already going to be selected, IPL matches were to see his fitness, not performance. Pandya was overall poor but was always first choice. Dube was already under consideration.

How can you say IPL was an influence when top scorers like Gaiwkad, Parag, Sai Sudarshan were never selected, Top wicket takers Harshel Patel, Varun, Rana, Natarajan were never selected, impact players like Abhishek were never selected?

Dravid already had a vision and which players he wanted way before the IPL.

DK playing as a no 4 batsman under cloudy seaming conditions in wc 2019 Semi Final after sitting on the bench for 9 matches takes the cake and dog biscuit.

Adding on to that, it also happened many times during the Kohli-Shashtri era that in crucial games of ICC tournaments, they included 3-4  wicket keepers in the playing11.    The match u mentioned (2019WC SF), we had 3 keepers.   DK, Pant & KL.   This severly restricted the bowling options.  Even part timers are crucial in whiteball cricket. They do get crucial breakthroughs as the batters usually go after them.

Young players with high potential to be stars are being pushed out. Kohli tried his level best to ruin Rishabh Pant's career.

Now Rohit doing same with Yashaswi, Rinku.

All these 30+ average players (KS Bharat, Dube, Kela) are preferred because they don't threaten the ad deals worth billions of rupees to seniors.

Shami not playing in 2017 CT Final

Umesh *

Shami didn't play a single game in that tournament and wasn't really that good with the white ball back then. Meanwhile, Umesh was our best bowler against Pak in the group stage match.

He was still damn good. Was our best bowler in 2015 WC and did well in 2014 Eng tour. Umesh was our best bowler in Pak game but Shami didnt even play.

Both should have played ahead of Bhuvi

Aah it was 2019 then. Yeah Umesh should have played in the 2017 CT final especially since he destroyed them in the group stages.

Dhongi making it to 2019 wc squad. He was done before 2015 wc itself but made it till 2019. Was tried almost every position barring opening between 2015-19. Hundreds of article about his batting positions and finishing ability and another tons of chutyapa. Hero-worshipping at it is lowest.

Another one is Yuvaraj making it to CT17 squad. Kohli played as usual his yarana card and brought back Yuvi as soon as he became captain. Yuvi in ODI format was done long ago. Scored hundred against England in home game and locked him for CT17.

KLR-the maiden merchant in wt20 2022. Was injured throughout after 2021 wt20 and made it as opener as soon as he got fit..

Dhawan in 2016 WT20. He wasn't fit for T20 format specially when Rohit fatso was another opener. Was dropped in 2014 WT20 SF-Final, still picked him just to drop again for another loser Rahane.

Sky in 2023 wc. Idiotic selection. Doesn't need any explanation.

Bigger was him not playing in 2019 semis after picking 14 wickets in 4 games

Bhuvi more than his poor bowling has cost us more games by occupying Shami’s slot lol

Yes no idea why he was preferred. Perhaps batting but Shami could slog too.

India team is just full of jokers and chokers, mates.

Yeah, that's why the losers of Pakistan got beaten twice in the T20 WC.

Once by Indian Cricket team, then by Indian IT Cricket team.

Yet the loosers of Pakistan who have won less ICC trophies than India call us chokers :cantstop:
